OK, my radiator was bad so instead of poning up for a new stock one I bought an Aluminum one from Summit. A genaric cross flow made by Griffin. It sure fits the front nice but seems thin one row about 1.5 inches thick. Grifin guy said it is good for up to 350HP which I am sure my 390 4X will never see. I should be up and running in couple of days. Any comments?
I have always wondered how one of those would cool an FE. Let us know how it performs. I wonder if they make any heavy duty universal radiators, I am sure that version would be on the small side for my '66.
I bought the bigger one that cools up to 600hp. Still waiting for the darn radiator cap and purge tank. It seems heavy duty enough. The aluminum is thick and sturdy. The stock one got dented easy from rocks, the Griffin aluminum radiator seems like it will take more of a beating than the stock one.
I used summit part number. GRI-1-45272-X for 159.95. Yes I know it is the Chevy set up that is what I wanted. I put a CABRA Style reversed expansion tank on- Yeas I am crazy. When the hood was opened I want you to think the engine was ripped out of a cobra complete with Penta-Valve covers, expansion tank, 406 CI headers, single pulley 427 counter balance, etc. I will be pulling my Kirkham roadster. I want the whole thing to look "late 60's". Thanks
Big-boss; That radiator you bought is actually state of the art. It has only one row of tubes but they are 1.25" front to back. It is furnace brazed aluminum which takes it to about 1,100 degrees farenheit. That anneals the aluminum so that is soft and it will dent but very difficult to puncture because of the flex. High end brands like Mercedes are going to this style of radiator because of it's greater efficiency being only one row. The only difference being they use dimpled tubes to promote turbulent flow. (Also, it is cheaper to build a one row.) It is good for 350hp, but that is using 350hp all day long. It will cool you rig easily.
Got mine from Summit also, p/n GRI-7-566BW-FAX. It was pricy at 600 bucks but what the heck. If it works good it'll be worth it to me. I've got a lot of money in my engine and I want it to cool better than it is doing with a stock radiator. I believe it is a two row, but like B-dox says, the tubes are big. I did the research on Griffins web site, then ordered from Summit.
