Radiator questions.
Radiator questions.
Now that I put my truck up for sale, the radiator has began leaking. I am going to replace it but would like to gain some knowledge about them. There is standard cooling, extra cooling and super cooling from the factory correct ? My truck has 400/A-T and A/C so from what I've read it should have extra cooling package correct ? I looked at my parts truck it has a 460 /A-T and A/C it's radiator was about 5 inches taller and thicker than mine. Super Cooling right ? Was that standard for the 460 ? I could take that radiator and put into my truck if I wanted too-correct ? I'm leaving it in the parts truck, but if I wanted a bigger radiator would it be better for my truck. I've never had any cooling problems since I put a shroud back on. Would you back with the stock size unit or go bigger ? 3 0r 4 row. I can get a H-D radiator for about $140.00 at the local O'Reilys.

When the truck comes factory equipped with a super cooling radiator, the radiator core support is different. So, the super cooling radiator can't be used in a truck that didn't come that way, and vice versa. You only recourse is buy an aftermarket radiator that will fit in the holes in the core support.
Radiator core support differences between super cooling and reg/xtra cooling.
Super cooling radiator: 28" Between radiator mounting holes
Std & xtra cooling radiator: 23" Between radiator mounting holes
So, there is no way to mount a Ford std/xtra cooling radiator that has 23" mounting holes on a super cooling radiator core support. And there's no way to mount a Ford super cooling radiator with holes that are 28" apart on the std/xtra cooling radiator core support. No way.
Radiators don't have numbers on them, but fan shrouds do. Look at the upper left corner of the shroud, there's an engineering number there (example: D3TA-AA). Post that number, and the shroud will be known, then the radiator size can be determined.

I put a bigger radiator where a smaller 6cyl radiator was. I had to do some trimming to the opening in the radiator support. If my memory is correct there were already mounting holes that matched the bigger radiator. But Im not sure how that differs with std. cooling vrs extra cooling vrs supercooling.

He can swap the entire rad support over with the rad.
Had he not mentioned the parts truck, I would have said no they aren't inter-changeable.
I can see I have to be more specific in my answers.
The radiators for our trucks that came with a 400 came in two different sizes. 19 1/4 X 26 1/4 or 24 1/4 x 26 1/4... you could get either size as a 3 or 4 core. I had a 19 1/4 x 26 1/4 3 core in my supercab and I bought the bigger 4 core and it went right in. But if for some reason it didn't go in you could just drill some holes... easy enough

If you bought the new radiator at a parts house, they aren't the same size as the original Ford super cooling radiators.
Yes Dennis, I knew he had a donor truck, but the problem he is having, is with a truck he has for sale. Swapping core supports entails disconnecting all the wiring, removing both fenders and aprons, and the grille assembly off two trucks. And then re-assembling one. An all day and unpleasent job.
