Power steering pump being put off

My dad has a 1986 Ford F150 4x4 302 and it does need a power steering pump but here is the question. Could it ruin something else if you keep adding fluid to it. It has been out for at least a year but how long is too long till it starts running something else.

I don't understand... If you have to keep adding fluid, it has to go somewhere so it's leaking out someplace.

Running it totally dry will wear out the bearings but it must have had at least some fluid otherwise the steering wouldn't be power at all.

Ya it is leaking me and my dad call it leaving it's trail.. I don't have it ever bone dry it always has some. I guess this means we just ought to change it out soon. I was just wondering.

Are you sure the leak isn't coming from a hose or the steering gear?

I am not sure but the pump is for sure needing replaced you have to fill it past the regular level for it actually be able to turn. Plus it whines like crazy and drives my brothers and dad crazy.

When I replaced the belts on my 87 the pump started leaking. It was the return hose. It did take a bit for the air to work out of the system. When I first filled it up it was spotty and whined. I worked the wheel back and forth a few times then drove it. It got better after a few miles.

Pumps are fairly cheap and easy to replace. I guess if it still has some fluid in it then wear wouldn't be too bad. If the pump locked up the belt would squeal like hell. Then probably snap. Which would take out the water pump IIRC. Or maybe that's driven by the A/C...

The other issue is if the pump frags internally it will dump crap into the steering box...
