Hello FE guys....This is the first FE motor me, so I need your help.....I'm building a 67 390 flat top pistons the heads will have a little work done and two 4s, with full headers.......How big can I go on the cam with the stock non adj rockers???? I'd like to run a Comp Thumper with around .500 lift......thanks guys......Jim
I'm running the comp xe274h (.562/.565 lift) on the non-adjustables. The only addition I've made is to add end stands from Doug at Precision Oil Pumps. According to Barry R (FE guru) thats near the max lift for the non adjustables without needing to shim and whatnot to keep proper geometry. Any spring over 315lb open pressure also gets end stands.
That said, if you're spending the money for a full rebuild, you might want to go ahead and at least get a set of the factory adjustable rockers. Much easier to set lifter preload by turning an adjuster screw than measuring clearance and getting the correct length pushrods.
Not impressed with the Thumper line. A lot of bark for the bite (just a ton of overlap to give it a big sound). There are much better performance grinds out there IMO.
What vehicle is this going in? Also just curious, what intake are you using?
Thanks for the info, it going in my 63 1/2 Galaxie....kinda a budget build, but I thought I would really need the adj rockers...Thats why the Thumper, not much lift......thought I could save money on rockers.....
If you're set on the Thumper, then you'll have no problems using the stock system as is. You're going to be leaving some power on the table though. Even their CamQuest program says so.
I asked Barry the same question, "What's the most cam I can use with the non-adjustables?" because I was also on a tight budget. That's why I'm running what I am. Nice chop at idle and pulls hard to 5400rpm.
