What year GP controller is this?
What year GP controller is this?
I am working on getting a 92 7.3 from a F450 installed in my 1986 F350. The F350 has a strange glow plug controller mounted to the passenger fenderwell. Is this some form of aftermarket deal or what? Im not sure how it functioned as the heads were already off the motor. So I am not certain if there was a controller in the head as well. I will have to ad the picture of it into my profile as thats the only way I know how to share. I am trying to get a plan together for hooking up the plugs and controller from the 92. So any help here would be great. If not, what do I need to hook up on the 92 wire controller to just put in a button. I am not a electrician so go easy on me.
Did everyone skip my post?
That is not the same as a 7.3L style controller. That looks like someone hacked a chevy unit on there...

This is one for a 7.3, located the same as the Chevy unit does.

Hmm, I wonder. It is nothing like the one on my 85 f250 and the 92 450 is completely different. Thats why I wanted to go with the newer style as Im not sure who did what here. I do know it used to work.
This is the 7.3L style controller, and some say, the best option for our trucks.

The Chevy 6.5L diesel uses temperature limiting glow plugs which are designed differently than our glow plugs. I can't be sure, but its possible that the chevy unit could either not glow them at all, or burn them all out in a fairly short time (say weeks instead of the years you should get).
Then, if you're the only one that ever drives your truck, you can go the route i did and use a reg starter solenoid and a push button and have manual only glow plugs. Cost me $12 and if the plugs are on too long its cause i did it, not a failed controller.

I will probably just add a button like I did on my 85. With new motorcraft plugs that truck would fire no matter how cold. Seems like the best route then trying to rethink the wheel.
