My 78 351 engine starts really hard in all weather conditions. I checked it over and all ignition parts are good or else have been replaced. Timing is good as well. It gets plenty of fuel but stumbles really bad and smokes a lot during start up. I will crank the hell out of it and it will sputter and shake like crazy and I have to keep it reving for at least 7-10 minutes before I can let it idle. It will stall constantly during the warm up process and sometimes as it will stumble so bad it ends up putting on one cylinder for quite some time. The dang thing sounds like an old johnny popper. After all this horrible start up process it will run like a champ. This engine is a low-mileage rebuild and it has tons of power. I tuned the carb and went over everything but this starting issue is really annoying. The engine is not stock by far so problems are expected once the reliable factory parts are removed but I would like to have a truck I can start up and drive without waiting 10 minutes for it to warm up. Does anyone have any thoughts?
If its blowing alot of black smoke while your reving it up, it is its loading up with fuel and thats not good on a new engine. It can wash the cylinders with fuel and cause ring problems. Do you have a electric choke hooked up on the on the engine? If you do, check the choke pull off with a vac. pump and check voltage to the choke with the key on.
It's a manual choke and I'm working it correctly. The truck smoked badly for the first couple of runs after I got it running after sitting for 1 1/2 years but it does not smoke as bad. I have an air/fuel ratio gauge on it and it still says it's running rich no matter how I adjust the carb so it smokes for a bit but stops once warm. The truck use to have an older duel fuel gas/propane injection set up on it when I bought it so I'm wondering if maybe I need new jets in the carb now that I'm not running the propane setup anymore?
