I have a 85 f150 with a newly re-built holley 4180. The Engine start great when cold ( Finally) and runs for about 2 Minutes until the temperature guage starts to move. Then I can't hardly keep it running at idle until the engine completely warms up (15-20 Mins.) Think the choke is opening to slowly?
Is it too rich, black smoke? If the choke is not opening soon enough first check to make sure you have power to the electric choke, check and make sure the choke itself is not sticking as it opens. Then to lean the choke from the right side of truck looking at the choke I believe you will turn it clockwise, I have a 4160 on mine which replaced the 4180 as I remember they were the same. hope this helps, feel free to E-mail if need be.

I didn't see any black smoke this morning. the choke has no index marks so how far should I adjust at a time? 1/8 inch or half way around? I also see that I need to replace the missing heater tube (the "snorkle" tube the runs warm air to the air cleaner)
i have the same carb on my truck there should be marks on it on my sticker under my hood for adjustments it says that the choke should be 3 rich mean means 3 marks rich i had the same problem you do would start and run for about 2 minutes then id go to drive it and it wouldnt want to idle for another 15 to 20 minutes untill that temp guage got in the middle i thought my choke was to rich come to find out was to lean if your standing in front of the truck losen the 3 screws that hold the automatic choke in place and turn it counter clockwise all the way to the back if you dont have marks then id say that it is about 1/8 of an inch turn forward mine has the marks so i put it at 3 the people before me had it at like 9 clicks because the power valve was blowen was the old carb off the old block had never been touched and it was on the engine that is in it now so it was do to be done which made the truck run rich they probley thought it was the choke and leaned the choke plus the truck is from AZ where it dosent ever get really cold now its in northern California lol where it dose get cold and snows i rebuild the carb after realizing the power valve was junk making it idle like crap and run like crap so maybe yours may be set to lean the choke hope you figure it out soon
