i have a 302 in my 74, engine runs great and idles well, but sometimes when i go to start it it takes two or three times before it will start any advice or solutions to what it might be?

I agree it could be the choke but if your carb still is a manual choke than check to make sure the cable is lubed, adjusted and working well. The best way I have found to start any manual choke Ford is to pull the choke out all the way pump the gas pedal just once or twice then crank the engine over. As soon as it fires push the choke back in. If it dies pull the choke back out and start it again.push the choke cable in or out untill it runs smoothly. Get to know your rig and how much choke it wants and you won't have any problems with flooding it like with a electric choke.

I have an electric choke on it already, in the morning when its cold i pump it once and it starts right up, its after its been runnin a while and i turn it off to go in the store or it will sit for a half hour or so and it will take 3-4 turns of the key to start.
