Friggin 4x4 issues...

My 2002 7.3 had hub issues, to no end.

Now, my 08 6.4 doesn't want to engage and sometimes leaves 4x4 on its own. driving in 4x4 is a grinding loud weird experience.

Had it to the dealership a few times, all they said was that maybe it's not working cause its cold. My bud at work, has an 08 6.4 also, and his works perfect.

Sometimes mine disengages going from rev to drive, or drive to rev, and sometimes it just lets loose and grinds like a *******.

Couple things...

First ever pull the hubs and do any maintance on them?

Secondly I take it you have ESOF. So what happens if manually lock the hubs in? Then if you need the fronts just turn the switch.

How does it operate in that mode?

The first thing to check is to see if things work properly with the hubs manually locked instead of auto. If they do then you need to check the pulse-lock vacuum lines for leaks.

I recall reading of a company that sold a kit to replace the lower portions of the vacuum lines with Aeroquip type lines that are a bit less vulnerable to damage from road debris. I can't seem to find the company again though.

If things don't work properly with the hubs manually locked, one or both are likely broken. Looking at the manual, the hubs don't look too bad to tear apart. They also aren't that expensive either, I believe someone reported $150 or so.

I know i'll end up getting them taken apart, cleaned and lubed, but I'm pissed that the dealership is pretending like thats normal for 4x4 not to engage just cause its a little chilly.

Sadly it seems that most dealerships are pretty clueless or at least the service managers / writes are. It seems the techs are often not the best either.

I'm fortunate that the dealer I deal with seems to be pretty good. They don't have much markup on parts, the techs seem to be pretty good and the service manager while not a truck expert is good to deal with if you provide him the right info.

Sounds like a vacuum issue to me, try the hubs in lock and see.
