Fan in engine compartment question.

This happened for the first time yesterday. Driving down the highway and "a" fan came on in the engine compartment. It is really loud sounds like a huge blower. The engine temp is normal. The degas bottle is at the proper level. No check engine or wrench lights. It will run even in town doing 15-20 mph. It will shut off for a bit then engage again. Curious what is going on.

I would think it is the engine cooling fan clutch engaging and operating as it should.

the fan will make quite a bit of noise like you described, and turn on and off during normal engine temps, but why you have never heard it operate before is my question to you. how long have you had this vechicle? If it is different from normal then you may have a problem, but if this is a relitively knew to you truck, and your just not used to it than it is most likely normal.
