Engine Cooling Fan On

My question is, does the engine cooling fan come on all at once or a little at a time? The only time I know when it is on is when it is running full on. This happens at about 226-228 degrees F, at least that is when I can hear it from inside.
This is an 04 ex with an 03 6.0l.
Thanks for any info.

I can't answer your question other than I hear mine kick in at 220 and then disengages about 216. And I have rolled down the window to try and hear it better..

It's an objective (?) thing with the fan. Using the Dash Daq to do a little monitoring, I see the fan "come on" at 196-200, but not "full on", and I never hear that. The fan speed jumps from 1/3 of engine RPM's to more than engine RPM's at idle. From what I understand, at 100% commanded on the engine fan should run about 2800 RPM's if the engine is running 2000 RPM's. That would be some serious noise. What sucks is that when I try to increase engine RPM's "manually" the engine cools off enough that the fan "disengages". That's why Ford has to actively command the fan using IDS to test for proper operation.

And it's not just coolant temp. that controls the fan. The eot's and ect/eot spreads also have input to the pcm fan commands.
