We also can't forget, 6.9's will naturally run cooler than 7.3's as 7.3's have a pretty big coolant passage blocked off in the heads, while in 6.9's, it's open.

I have a 6.9 IDI that I just inherited and i went through the entire cooling system about a week ago before I put it on the road. I installed a new Ford T-stat, hoses, belts, and fresh Prestone 50/50 blend. It is warming up hear in Florida a bit and today I ran the truck for about 40 miles on the Interstate at speed with other traffic (70mph i think, no speedo either) in 82 degree weather and my factory gauge never gets up to the "N" in Normal. I don't know if the temp sender unit or the factory gauge is bad. Any help would be great. Thanks

Get a real gauge, the stock dash gauges in these trucks, are useless. They're basically an idiot light with an arm.

Down here in Georgia my '87 6.9 runs 180 to 190 right now in the cool winter of 50 to 70 degrees. Last summer in the 90+ days it would run about 190 to 200. And I thought mine was running hot last summer.
