Electrical mess

Ive noticed a lot of you guys have very clean engine compartments and the wiring is tucked a way very nice and neat. Me, on the other hand, have the OEM harnesses running everywhere and across everything.

I want to delete as much of the rats nest as I can. For one, most of the pigtails and wiring is so old and rotten I dont trust it. Two, I use my 84 Bronco for driving 10 miles a day, not much travel time so I dont need a lot. The electrical work that was done prior to my ownership was poor at best. Im finding splices and ratty connections everywhere in almost every loom. A fire hazard to say the least. There are even a number of loose pigtail connections just hanging around the motor with no where to plug them in! I dont know what they do or where they SHOULD go!

My question: What can I delete so as to keep the truck running (obviously), and keep the few creature comforts (heater, radio)? The more basic the better. I have a very harder time chasing down each wire on those confusing wire diagrams in the Haynes/Chilton books, which is what brings me here before the experts. I realize this is a bit of a broad question, but if I could be pointed at a few harnesses that are uneccesary, it would be much appreciated.

BYW, I have an 84 Bronco 300, carburated 1bbl Carter, smog exempt, no major upgrades mostly bone stock. Thanks in advance fellas!

Wriz,

Your question was moved from the 6-banger-specific forum here to the 80-86 forum, I'm hoping to get more eyes on your question.

Don't take this wrong, the guys over there are pretty good and would do what they can to help, but they would probably end up telling you to post this question here.

Wriz - You say you are smog-exempt, but does that mean that all of the smog stuff has been deleted? Or, is it there and just not hooked up or not working? We just need to know where we are starting from, and it makes a big diff if things are still there.

And, a picture would help us as well. It would let us say "take that off" or leave that thing there".

Having said that, you may have a large job on your hands if the PO hacked up the wiring. Frequently the wire gets so oily and corroded that you can't get a reasonable connection on it. And, my personal creedo is to solder connections and use shrink tubing on them rather than crimped connections and/or tape.

Anyway, if you can get us a picture and explain what's still there it would help.

I just use a bit of spit and a prayer on my truck. Haven't had a problem yet...

84 300, these were typically equipped with the feedback carb and TFI ignition system, which have to be fully intact to function *correctly*.
Step 1, tell us whether the dist has a vacuum pod on it, or the large 6-7 wire box.
Step 2, tell us if the carb has several wire plugs with at least one that contains a lot of wires.
Pics of each would be very helpful here.
