and i'm referring to the rewiring of my beloved 53 !!! i can chop up weld , shove things in or under anything i want and eventually make it work , but the wiring / electrical is bad voodoo for me . criminy just trying to rewire the taillights , turn signals etc. in the rear sent me into a headache producing , mass hysteria !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it'll never run again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i am forcing myself to do this from scratch just to make ME learn this black art !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm only 1 day into it and i thought i had it all figured out , save for the heater / blower motor i was gonna use . i'll tell ya i'm thinking about running away fast in the other direction ................ add all this too the 52 being a pain in the **** , not wanting to stay running and i'm beginning to lose my sense of humor , and the wife and kids hid all my B.F.H'S to keep me from harming something or myself ........
LOL! Don't let wiring intimidate you, there's really no magic to it. When it starts getting the upper hand you have to be prepared to give it a proper kickin.
There's a few basic things you need to have on hand before you really get going and hurt somebody;
1, A fridgerator full of frosty beverages
2, patience
3, A fridgerator full of frosty beverages
4, Time (probably the hardest to come by)
5, an open mind
6, A fridgerator full of frosty beverages
Step back, take a few deep breaths, twist the top of a frosty beverage and look things over a bit.
If you give us some specifics there will be someone around that can help walk you through it.

I've successfully totally rewired a couple trucks from the ground up and they're still working to this day--Always surprises me too. But my secret is that I just do one wire at a time and don't really give the rest of the wiring any thought. And when I get done because each piece was correct--then the whole is correct. The "big picture" of wiring --to me--is too confusing. I'm not suggesting I know how it all works. In fact I don't. Just break it down to a single wire--one at a time and you'll succeed. Go slow.
I'm getting real close to the wiring point of my truck. I definitely am not lacking for recreational beverages. I've read some great ideas on this site over the last two years and Tom's point of doing everything 'one at a time' is the best. I also plan on doing mine in sections, again like others have suggested. I want to be able to pull apart one electrical connection to remove my bed. Same for front end.
A friend of mine just bought a brand new 2010 F150 and it has the most heavy duty firewall harness quick-disconnects that I've ever seen. I might look into some of those completing my 'sectional' idea.

I used some weatherpack waterproof connectors on my build at the firewall to be able to quick disconnect..
wiring is really a bunch of big loops.. one side is the body/chassis, the other side is the one wire at a time. If you use something like the EzWire, Painless, etc harnesses, these are labeled every few inches where they go..

Julie of course will poo poo the prebuilts, but thats only cause she is a master at this stuff.. (and maybe has an unlimited supply of wire!!) Her wiring diagrams are wonderful..
no prebuilts . that's why were doing it the hard way , and to make it harder were using a multitude of different parts from several trucks . had the wiring color codes written down , but somehow it has wandered off ................. gotta learn it somehow . we have the frosty beverages taken care of bobby and some copies of the stuff julie had posted so ....................

I bow to you..
not only no prebuilts, but the extra pain of blending multiple harnesses...
I will be using a prebuilt. However I still keep finding other things to work on. Have no problem with wiring homes, but auto wiring bugs the bejesus out of me. I will be watching these posts to overcome my mental block.
This little concise and cartoon drawn wiring booklet has been the basis of much of my wiring experience. I found it helpful. Don't know if its still available or not. But other books like this can help too. I bought it at Speedway motors.
It's long but at least that's a good excuse for a couple frosties some evening while studying! (you can start at post #55, you know everything prior to that)
PS Did I send you the Power Point file with the drawings so you can enlarge them? I think so, maybe - long time ago? I've added some and corrected a few things. Send me a real e-mail at babbiebuddie@***.net and I'll send you the updated version - much better.
Lessons I've learned in no particular order
factory wiring diagram
quality multimeter
lots of test leads with aligator clamps at each end
A fuse somewhere in every circuit
Use the correct gauge wire
Purchase a large supply of crimp-on connectors of appropriate style and gauge (McMaster Carr is a great source)
High end wire stripper crimper
lots of shrink wrap and 115 volt heat gun
monster assortment of cable ties
lots of time and patience
sufficient liquid refreshment to celebrate success and/or neutralize angst
yep julie i seen it and have been looking at the links , as well as revisiting other post's and looking fore and at the multitude of notes i have . prolly the reason i'm so cornfused !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! welp it's on hols now till my next day's off sunday and monday , so hopefully 'tween then and now i'll get my head wrapped around it again ! yeah i'll get back with ya on the updated diagrams julie .... i lost a lot of info etc... the last time this stupid thing crashed .
