Clockwise vs Counterclockwise

Let me first say....Im a *******!

I put a new cap and rotor on the 4.9L today and out of habit, re-connected the cables to cap counterclockwise. I tried to start the engine, I heard a pop and smelled burnt "something". I realized my mistake and connected them properly. Now it wont start. Turns over great, but gives no effort of starting. Inside of cap in clean, rotor appears unaffected. Im guessing Im not getting spark to the cylinders.

What did I do?! Let the beatings begin.........

Is this the '84 Bronco specified under your name?

If so, does it still have the entire feedback carburetor (computer controlled) setup still installed?

Stock was the computer controlled feedback setup. However, a lot of people swap them out for the Duraspark II ignition. Just seeing what ignition system you currently have installed to help diagnose.

Quick way to tell is if there are solenoids on the carburetor, a plug in directly on the side of the distributor (not a wire with a plug on on the end), and a big CHUNK of wires going into the firewall and into the cab. It also has a small distributor cap.

A duraspark II distributor has a vacuum line running to it from the carburetor, and has a much larger cap. Plus, there's an ignition module screwed down to the driver's side wheel well.

OK, it must be computer controlled because there is no duraspark II ignition, and I have the solenoids on the side of the carb with the plug as you described.

Stand down! When the truck backfired, it must have pinned the choke valve shut allowing no air in. Once I popped it back open, it fired right up. Thanks!

Pull the plugs, I bet they're fouled.

Hah! I've had that happen to me before, but had forgotten about it. I was working on the ignition/coil at the time, so I figured it was completely ignition related. After a few hours of hair pulling, I found the choke 100% shut.
Opened it up 1/8" and VROOM.

I hadn't replied to your previous post yet because I was racking my brain trying to figure out what would be damaged by a spark plug firing in the wrong order.... Hadn't come up with anything yet.

Glad you figured it out.
