I have a 2010 F250 with the standard 4 pin and 7 pin trailer connectors. I just bought a trailer that I need to pick up that has a five pin connector. Is there any way I can adapt the 4 pin to accept the 5 pin??? I will permanently fix it and add a five pin in the spring, But I have to go a couple of hours to pickup the trailer empty and would like to do it without changing the factory harness (No need for trailer brakes).
Another question:
Standard Utility/Cargo trailer (12,500 gvrw), Truck is totally stock XL package, Do I need a drop hitch, If so, How much of a drop??
What is the purpose of the 5th pin? I have heard that some trailers with surge brakes require the backup lights on the 5th pin to keep the brakes from activating when you're backing up. I don't know why, but that's what I heard.
I would make sure I knew what the 5th pin was for, then find the cheapest 7 to 5 pin adapter I could find. Or, buy a new 7 pin plug and put it on the trailer on the scene. You can do it with just a screwdriver, generally.
The hitch you will need will just depend on the trailer and the load. I'd get a pretty standard 2" drop for now and then see what you need later.
5th prong usually is for brake release while backing up.
With my F450 I was backing up those with no 5th pin just fine.
Older trucks don't have backup light connected to the plug and I would have my doubts 2010 does.
And again, make sure you have the backup light connected to 7 pins. Otherwise the adapter will do absolutely nothing.
Ford trucks as early as 94 (my brothers) and 96 (my Dad's) had the 7 pin wired for backup lights. Every one I've seen since that had a 7 pin was wired the same. It's a standard and I'm sure they've done it since they put 7 pins on at the factory.
There was a period in early 2000 or around there where some towing relays and fuses were in a bag in the glove box, instead of in the fuse/relay boxes, but as far as I know, this was only a couple years.
Bought the adapter (7 pin to 4 or 5 pin) today at Tractor supply, threw in the the ball also: Buyers Adjustable Tri-Ball Mount, 12 in. vertical, 10,000 GTW

Out the door for a buck seventy!!
Aren't you missing zeros before decimal point?
Evan adapter can be found cheap, the 10,000 hitches are not cheap.
How it works?
