I have to replace the heads on my 1986 F350 460. One is cracked dthe other has broken exhaust studs. I am looking for the best heads to give me more torque and hp, closed chambers and so on?
Most of the smog stuff is gone and headers are already on truck, its my towing truck, stock intake and Holley 600 carb.
there are 5 different heads available from the head rebuild company;
E5TE
E6TE
D3VE
D4VE
D5VE
They all cost about the same $223 to $247 ea. Which ones would give me more hp and torque or are they all the same?
Also what would be the best head gasket, copper o rings, std felpro blue??
Heads are basically the same. Fel-Pro black gaskets would be my choice, if you can still get them. For what you are using it for I'd go back with the same casting# you have now which should be the E6 heads.
there are no casting numbers between my exhaust ports, I have headers, and I check at the shop today there is nothing there????
anyone have a picture of them and where they are supposed to be???
The casting number is located on the outside of the head, along the valve cover mounting rail and between the 3rd and 4th exhaust port. Should read something like "D3VE-A2A" or "C9VE-A" or "D0VE-C."
I was rumaging through my used heads today a found a pair of 460 heads that did not have a casting number there .
D4VE and D5VE shouldn't exist for a 460. IIRC those casting numbers would be on 351m/400 heads maybe but no 460 heads with those castings. Ford used D3VE from 73 thru mid 80s
There are NO CASTING NUMBERS ON THE OUT SIDE OF MY HEADS at all, scrubbed the area with gunk and there is nothing ?
what next?
I only need one at the moment, the service station that broke the heads told me to go "f" my self and I am going to have to go to court to recoup my money.
would the E6TE be a safe bet I found a rebuilt one for $224?

Wait until you take the head off and take it with you to match up another one .
Somebody correct me if I am wrong ,but d3ve and later heads ( large combustion chambers) are basically the same except for smog stuff .
How do you know you have a cracked head ?
Have you looked on ebay , craigslist , want ads for a pair of rebuildable heads ?
Nothing special about stock late model 460 heads . I have 3 sets of rebuildable heads I would gladly take $100 a set for , but shipping would kill you . Maybe you could place a free craigslist ad for want to buy (wtb) and pick up some locally .
There is a hugh whole where one on the bolts go near the 3rd exhaust port, it is shooting flames and exhaust out of the hole, and causing backfiring issues. popping like crazy,
the rebuilt heads come through advanced auto parts and have to be ordered and they want the casting number before I order it in order to match it up? there is a $50 core charge and $24 shipping charge so I can not just match them up.
These are already rebuilt and ready to bolt on, I only have to swap my rockers and get new push rods.
This is getting to be a big mess, the so called lady who owns the garage who broke the heads call the police on me,5 min ago and said I was threatening her, which never happened, this is how she is setting up her court case!
All this because they did a **** poor job of acting like mechanics and broke more parts than they fixed
So are the casting numbers under the valve covers??
