Okay, i dunno if anyone here has seen my previous thread about how my stupid butt messed up the stock heads of my 460 by porting them too much and grinding through into a coolant passage, but i did. I took the head to a shop and they said that it's not easily repairable, and just reccomended that i get new heads.
Now the thing is, i'm poor So ideally i'd like to be able to just junkyard some new heads. The engine is from an '89 F-450, so what other year fords will have compatible heads? Or are the heads specific to the year? I can't imagine they would change that much. All i need is just the bare head, i can salvage the valves, rockers, springs, etc from the old heads.
Also, is it okay to just replace one head? Or should i really do both? I would consider just getting new ones, but i can't seam to find anyplace that sells just stock replacements (they all come with fancy valve jobs and stuff), nor sells just the bare heads. They all seam to come with new valves and all that kinda stuff.
So what year range in 460s should i look for to get new heads?
Oh, one more thing. I want to get chrome valve covers, but the only ones that i can find have the 7 bolts along the edges. These heads have 4 bolts along the middle of the valve cover. When did they change this?

Reason: added question about valve covers
The heads off of any 460 with EFI should fit. That would mean 1988 and up.
If you have one ported head you should port the other one to match or put on 2 unported heads. I've never seen chrome valve covers for a newer 460. The covers you have now are aluminum and you might be able to get them polished.
Hey, i'm not haveing any luck finding junkyard heads. Does anyone know of anyplace that sells just bare, stock replacement heads? The only ones i've been able to find have been full heads that have been re-worked for preformance, and are like $800 a pair. I just need plain, bare, stock heads, but i can't find anyplace that sells 'em.
It may just be nessary to replace the head that is ported to far. Also, how do you know that you hit the water jacket? If you cant notice it when its running then just run her til she blows is what might be the best bet. My guess is that the engine was blowing tons of steam out with the water in the cyclinder.
