I just got a tilt wheel column from a 88 f150 from the JY last Friday, havent put it in yet, going to try to do it someday when it gets warmer. the truck I pulled it from had cruise control, I dont know if my truck has the wiring for it, I know if def wasnt equipped with it, but if my truck has the wiring, Ill do a cruise control JY upgrade some day
How hard is it to remove just the iginition so I can use my original one? I have the key for the new column, but I have 2 sets of keys for my original and didnt want to make new ones.
Not to be getting off the subject, but how much hassle to switch to the newer style with the separate lever? I've got a '91 & tend to push a little harder than I should sometimes. Just feels kinda flimsy to me & would rather have the separate lever that you pull toward you.
I wouldnt really know, but I do know the one I just pulled was relatively easy to pull, just 2 bolts under the dash and i think 5 small self tap screws that hold it to the fire wall and the whole works just pulls right out into the cab. and unplugging 2 wiring plugs, it can come out in 20 mins tops.
the tilt wheel from 92 -96 f-150 would be a real challenge,it is a shorter column wiring plugs are different wiper controls are on turn lever, mounting is different !!!! stick with the older one
I was gonna say, Ford has offered tilt steering in the trucks since the 70's. All through the 80's. My '87 XL 2wd with the 300/4-speed SROD came with factory tilt and cruise on the steering wheel. I'll let you guess which of those two features don't work right now...lol
Also, the 2 wire harness plugs match up fine, but on the new column that has cruise control must be wired different because the the horn is now operated by the "on" button for the cruise control. I wanna switch the wires back so the horn functions normally.
Does anyone have a labeled wire diagram or just knows which wire on the '88 column is supposed to be the horn and which one is the horn wire on my '87 truck

Do all the wire color codes match at the harness plug?
If they do, you need to install the horn pad from the original
column on to the new tilt column.
The cruise control column uses a relay to activate the horn.
If you decide to complete the cruise control upgrade at a later
time, you can reinstall the new horn pad but you will need to
rewire the horn circuit so a relay energizes the horn.
On the schematic on the right side of the page, the color of two
wires is incorrect.
The wire from the speed control switch control to the primary
of the horn relay coil is show as circuit 1 Dark Blue. It should be
Yellow/Light Blue.
Also the wire shown 151 Light Blue/Black from the speed control
switch to speed control Page 113 is not Light Blue/Black. Should be Dark
Blue.
The later trucks had a tilt column in every truck and was pinned in one position and the lever is missing. (if that makes any sense) in other words for me to swap to a tilt wheel all I needed was the lever, the plastic shroud around the column with a hole in it, and the springs. Im not saying the older trucks are set up this way but it could save you some time in rewiring and swapping ignition switches. It wouldn't hurt to take a look.
