My '63 Unibody needs a headliner. I know you can get stock replacements from several vendors, but I was wondering if there are any other options. It would be nice to get a custom one to mount a stereo, for example. Any ideas?
Recommend doing a search on this forum; seen several good options and styles. Just can't recall one with a stereo, Seen folks add a 90's style woodgrain box and place a radio in it and one with a cb mounted in the center area of the headliner.
The stereo units are for 67 and later trucks. Most have made their own headliners using FRP, and then either covering it, or painting it. There is a Pattern in file form that can be emailed to you. Do a search for "61-66 headliner pattern" It is a pretty good pattern, and can be cut and installed with basic hand tools.... I believe Broomfieldbum is the guy who has the Master pattern.
There is actually 2 threads with really good info. The first was a hard copy of a pattern that could be trace and cut without having to worry about size (I paid to get a copy sent, cheap for what I got). Next is a pdf file that has to be enlarged to size then cut then trace onto your material then cut again. I have both. If you need the pdf then send me an i.m with your email and ca send it to you. Both are great, one just has less work then the other.
Do you really want to put a stereo above your head? I never liked the stereos up on the headliner, how's your head-room? I guess you can always by the one that allows a remote to be used.
You don't have to be like everyone else, get creative and put it where you want. You can do your own headliner without a pattern.
Look no pattern. (Mirrors the hood)

I will put my stereo unit where it can't be seen when I'm at that point. For now I have my 8-track player on the hump. Sound system will be done at a later time.
Thanks for the replies and good info. Guess I'm going to have to do some work to get something custom, or save money. I'll have my truck back from the body shop this weekend and will post an update when I get one.
gangstakr, that looks great! Did you do that yourself?
Well I helped, I designed it and did what my friends in the upholstry shop said. I've known these guys for over 20 years so they let me do some of the work. I was in the way mostly, so then they took over and finished it. At least I learned what to do and how to do it. I think it's a job left for the pros.
Google RodDoors Interior. That is what I will be using. It says that they are out of business. I emailed them awhile back, and they send they could send one out.
Would you mind if it was copied? I was wondering what to do about a headliner.
I don't mind, I'm actually flattered. As you can see in the picture designing a headliner is endless. I've seen one with the gear and lightening bolt done in a 3D look. Very nice.
All good custom upholstery shops can do just about anything you can dream up.
You are welcome to copy mine if you like.
