I would like to remove the starter from my '70 F-250 390 v-8 but access is blocked by an exhaust header. I do not know the brand, they came with the truck. It is a single pipe setup on the pass side with a cross over pipe. All seams are welded, no clamps. Does anyone know of a work around for this? All tips appreciated, thanks.
He might be right but I have to use along long extension to get my starter off. Got to snake thur all the mounts and stuff in the way. Actually I use 2 extensions together about 1.5 feed long. If your starter is bad most likely it's the heat from the headers that caused it. Most people make some kind of heatshield to protect the starter. Good luck

You have taken the starter off and swapped in a new one on a FE in a truck with headers without taking the header almost totally off??

No but I've found it easier to take the starter off with long extensions that reach pass the motor mount. That is why I said it might help. I'm actually in the process of put headers and new mufflers on my truck right now.
Thanks for taking time to reply. "Cradled in there" is an accurate description of how it's situated. The starter works fine, same one since I bought truck in '82. I just wanted to replace the Bendix drive. As near as I can determine the starter must be removed to accomplish this.
