Dad is fixing up his '03 F-250 FX4 with a TorqShift Tranny. He would like to get better MPG with it (best has been 22, worst has been 14) without breaking the bank. I have been looking at an SCT Economizer Tuner as it tows a loaded trailer just fine. The truck is stock (to my knowledge) other than a "PCM Recalibration" sticker from Ford under the hood. (bought it from a dealer with 87k. Has about 143k on it now.) There is no smog here, so I'm looking at a cat delete pipe & one of those tuners. Is there anything else I should look at? Thanks!
I wouldn't complain about mileage like that. Very, very few folks get mileage above 20 mpg. The only way I can get up and stay in the low '20 is driving 60mph and I'm in a 2WD truck. The trucks that have a 4WD chassis don't get that great of mileage because of the extra drag in the front axle. I seriously doubt your going to get much better mileage than what your listing (assuming your hand calculating & not using he overhead display).
While I agree on most tuners...maybe a custom written one that limit's the involvement of the EGR valve isn't a bad idea. Gearhead or DP-Tuner comes to mind as folks that write TTY safe tunes. I'd for sure stay away form BullyDog & Banks.

I don't know if they did the heads when they recalibrated the PCM. Wouldn't tuning it run into risk of head gasket/stud failure & overhdeating? Thanks
