This is probably a really dumb question, but do I have to lock the hubs to get my truck (1978 F250) in 4 wheel drive? Also, the shifter for the transfer case says
4 LO LOC
4 LO
N
4 Hi
4 HI LOC
or something like that. Whats the difference between these? Also, when I move the shifter it's kind of hard to distinguish between the 4 HI and 4 HI LOC.
I've never owned a 4x4 before and have no owners manual.
That shift pattern is that of a full-time transfer case, so if you have locking hubs someone has installed a part-time kit, and yes you'll need to lock them to engage 4x4.
the transfer case you have has a differential inside, and when you put it in "LOC" it works like a locker and makes it so both front and rear have power distributed evenly. I wouldn't recommend going around any corners on the street in LOC.
