Have not heard that one. Just goop them up so they don't rust, and make sure bearing areas, bores and the deck areas are protected.

I have heard of this. That if you store a head or block in a way that doesn't spread the load that it can change shape. But we are talking a very small amount, like just a few thousands of an inch. In a straight 6 it could make a difference but on a V8 I don't think so.

well, its stretching it a bit....
Easy storage on the floor..........set it on the flywheel (on a wood base) or build a 2x8 box that batches the outer edge of the oil pan....or just set it on a used tire...spray with wd40 (not oil- because it will not stop the rust), bag it with a trash bag and you're good to go.

Storing engines

I have to disagree with the idea that WD-40 is a better rust preventative than engine oil. I have found that WD-40 tends to evaporate over a short time leaving very little protection behind, whereas parts wiped with oil retain the oil film indefinitely, along with an excellent rust protection.

I agree that blocks of wood or equivalent spacers should be put under engines stored on the floor as moisture does come up through concrete in greater or lesser amounts. Having the items spaced up from the floor allows the moisture to be dissipated harmlessly into the air. If large metal items are directly on the floor, sometimes the moisture will condense on their undersides.

What you also want to do is knock the dowel pins in the back of the block out that align the bellhousing.... If set the block down on them the weight of the block can cause them the crack the holes that house these pins....

I like to smear vasoline in the bored and leave the main bearing installed.... Then cover it in a trash bag.... Set it on some wood so it isnt on the floor either... In case of flooring...

Yes, definitely install the main bearing caps. They are individually fitted to the block. If not reattached, they tend to get permanently separated after a few years, rendering the block useless.

Beenscoot is correct.... A block stored with the caps on it will be useless... This might be what you were referring to earlier about warping.... I like to keep the old bearings in too
