Cold blooded 302

I have a 1990 ford p/u with a fuel injected 302. It will start and idle until it warms up, but you can't step on the gas or it will die until warm. Any ideas? Thanks

There are two coolant temp sensors on Ford FI engines. One sends a reading to your temp guage or light as the case may be but the other tell the ECC the engines temp and then the ECC will adjust it's settings as required. My guess is that that sensor is bad. It's not expensive and it's not hard to replace.

The sender that feeds the dash gauge has a single wire to it - most likely red/white-stripe or white/red-stripe I forget which.

The sender is a small, brass thing smaller than your thumb and I think is screwed into the intake manifold

The one connected to the computer is located on the thermostat outlet and has at least two wires going to it.

You might also pull the computer codes to see what it thinks might be happening:

Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test
Ford Ranger/Bronco II EEC-IV Testing

This should be the FIRST thing you do.

I tend to agree, there is zero sense in throwing parts at a problem that *might* solve the problem.

It's a computer-controlled engine and the computer can tell you what it is having problems with, inquiring with it is a logical first step.

Back again. No codes stored in koeo or koer. Went out and started it ran fine as long didn't hit gas. Died when I gave it gas. Held gas at half throttle until it cleared up and then ran perfect. Engine wasn't warm even. Any ideas?

Update

Went out and started truck and ran perfect. I guess it was mad at me or something. Will try again tomorrow and see how it acts.

Back again. Went out and started truck and died when I agve it gas. Got it started again and held steady throttle about half until it cleaned itself out and then it ran fine. What is going on? Could a injector be leaking by? Had all new injectors about a year ago. Bad plugs? Will put in new plugs when I can. Any ideas?
