Key fob/remote entry

I just bought a 2001 e350 (46,000 miles!) and it didn't come with key fobs. It does have power windows and power locks. After reading through the manual I saw the key fob programming procedure and so ordered a pair of fobs.

When I went to program the fobs I couldn't get the lock cycle that verifies you are in program mode. I ran through the procedure in detail, cycling back and forth between "off" and "on" eight times and ending at "on." Nothing.

So I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or perhaps my vehicle just doesn't have a remote entry installed. How can I check this?

Power Locks & Remote Entry are related, but not the same.

At one time Remote Entry came standard on Chateau, but by '01 it was optional. Typically Remote Entry employed a small receiver/control unit concealed behind the passenger side panel to left of 2nd row seat. Without this Black Box installed there's no Remote Entry. Think the pigtail to hook receiver unit up might be there if you have OEM Power Locks.

There may still be some aftermarket/conversion nonOEM Power Locks out there. Was surprised the 1st time I saw an alien Power Lock solenoid/motor. Of course these might not be compatible to OEM Remote Entry components.
