I own a 92' ford bronco with a tilt steering column and cruise control. The problem is that the bearings in the upper part of the column are worn out, and need to be replaced. It causes the steering wheel to move, and slope around. It's not in the tilt it's in the shaft of the column. I pulled the steering wheel off and tried to get to the shaft, but i do not know how to do that, there are no pins or screws once you take the steering wheel off. Will someone help me figure out how to get to the shaft and remove it. Thanks alot, also if any one has a picture of the exploded view of the column that would be much needed.
I have a column out of my parts truck that I've tried (halfheartedly) to disassemble just to take pics, but it's a huge pain. You can see a few pics of it in the GP Auto pics album in my signature link.
How hard was it to get that whole assembly out, i was thinking about just buying a replacemnt column for about 225.00. They are wanting to charge me 450.00 to replace the bearings in the column.
It's super easy. The older columns were easy, but that style is even easier. Get one from a junkyard for even less, and more complete. If you have a manual and the junkyard only has automatic columns, buy one anyway. You can pull the auto shifter and replace the upper shroud for $20 from Ford.
Thanks! I tried that guy and he said he only carried the lower and upper bearing, evidently the standard column has a lower and upper whereas the tilt has 3 bearings, I gotta believe that someone somewhere has these!
You can get rebuilt columns and parts from these guys. They may not be the cheapest but if anyone has it they do. You will probably have to look around on the site and/or email them to find the part(s) you want.
