down at one of my local junkyards theres a bronco that has a big block(351m or 400m) that i have pulled a few parts off of, but i got to wondering is if i pulled the big block front springs and stuck them under my 302 bronco, would i have any gain in hight? im not looking for anything extreme, just 1 or 2 inches, or maybe a pickups springs?(long box or extended cab, or one with a bigger engine) would these work without any negative effects? if need-be i might be able to afford the brackets to ofset the camber problems. and on the back i can use add a leafs or () blocks
The 351M and the 400 are really small blocks. They just use the big block bell housing. The springs are probly the same size as in your bronco, since those engines don't whegh that much more than your engine.
You can try and see tho.
no just the 4wd f250 and 350's had leaf springs. the 2wd's used coil springs. with you in south Texas you should see quite a few f250 and 350's next time ya out and think about it take a peek under the 2wds.
I have a 86 bronco with a 460. I used a 78 2wd for a donor including the the coils. The true length of the pick up springs was 3.75" longer and gave the bronco 3" of true lift. hope this helps
Head down to a parts shop that has a book that lists your springs. When I put a 460 in my Bronco I thought I put in HD Bronco springs.. turns out the guy gave me HD F-150 extended cab springs which did give me about a 1-2" Lift. But The 1-2" lift also came with bad camber on the tires and a stiffer ride. Those springs were a Moog # CC 824.
I wound up finally getting the correct coils for a Bronco HD which I think were a Moog CC820 or CC822.
I have an 83 Bronco with a swapped in built 460,about 2 years ago i installed f-250 rear springs, raised it about 3".In the front i installed 2wd 3/4 springs(1986) raised it up about 3" but, i did have to have a camber kit installed though.still sits level and rides fine. The 78/79 idea, I have a 79 bronco, i measured the front coils and they are about 18 1/2"S that from what i could see was about 4"s taller than what i have now.The only thing about that is that if you use the 18"plus coils its going to really put everything out of whack!! the radius arms will be in a bind, also the pitman arm too. I could only imagine what the camber would look like!! If you need to know more post again, thanks Chet 1983 Bronco 460, 400plus HP chevy killer!!!!(I seriously do HATE chevies man!!)
Also if you install the 3" body lift and the 2wd coils in front and 3" blocks in the back you can get 35"s on there no prob, my 91 bronco was done that way. I will post the pic soon for you to see
muscletruck- The springs are identical other than length. the 460 is about 250lbs more than the 302 so it may sit alittle higher. Also I had to get a cam alignment, they put the biggest cam which was a 2 degrees which does not get the camber all the way back but with tire rotation on a regular basis it has not cupped the tires yet. You can buy the drop brackets for the wish bone and extended radius arms, but that cost almost as much as the whole lift. If your budget is as tight as mine the 2wd springs will work. I put 2.5 inch blocks in the rear and sits pretty level. With the blocks and alignment I got 3 inches of lift for under $200. I also have a 3" body, although I run 33's it would easily clear 35's..
so basically if i found a 80's 2wd 250 and stole the springs it would gain me some respectable lift, at least enough to look good with 33's, but would is there a certain style(supercab, crewcab, etc)or engine size 250 that i would be looking for? or are they mostly the same? then if i got the alignment cams (from where and how much?) it would most likely be ok as soon as i get my winch on it, considering that it is a huge pto-gone-electric ramsey, hope fully it will look/perform good with 33's
this topic was also raised, but is there any other longer radius arms that will fit it? i believe that in one straight axle swap the guys had longer radius arms that they said came off ?78? bronco.
the steering i might have figured out, we have a 1 ton dodge van here that has a setup simular to a superrunner setup...

Well far as the years of pickups, mine was a 1978 camper special f250 with the 460. So does it have to be a big block model? I dont know. I guess a trip around the salvage yard would maybe be of some help. The coils out of the pickup measured 15.75 inches sitting on the ground if that helps. The cam alignment was $140 dollars including the cams.
I didnt price it seperate. It was $140 with the cams. I dont know enough about the cam alignment to tackle it myself. I left it to the experts, plus you get the warranty!!
