Need 5.4 engine interchange info

I have a 99 expedition that i am going to replace the engine in. It has a 5.4, and I need someone to tell me what years will work as a direct bolt in swap. I dont mind changing sensors and intake and fuel if needed, but would rather not have to change computer or heads. My local junk yards are not inspiring me with confidence with their interchange info. Some say 99 is a stand alone year and must be replaced with 99, some say 99-01 are ok, etc. Seems like every guy i ask has a different idea of what will work. I have a repair shop and have done many engine swaps, but just don't do much work on fords, so any info would be appreciated. I dont care if the engine i am putting in has lower hp as a non pi head motor has. I am just going to sell it when it's fixed anyway. Thanks in advance for the help.

"Any" 5.4 should work. It depends on which 5.4 you have and exactly how your going to do the swap. If its just the shortblock and your going to swap over the rest of your parts then any 5.4 will be fine.

If your doing a longblock swap then you need to figure out what you currently have. Weather it be a NPI, PI, if it has coil packs at the front of each valve cover, or if it has COPs.

Finding something that is as close to what you have now will obviously make the swap easier.

Thanks for the info. Since the more work i have to do the less money i make when i sell it, ideally i'd like to not have to change anything, but that almost never happens when switching motors. So if i get same type of heads and coil setup then the wiring will plug in without mod or having to change intake? I will for sure not even buy an engine that i have to switch heads to make it fit. As a general rule I always change water pump, thermostat, plugs, wires, replace oil seals etc when replace an engine. If engine has timing belt then do that too. Is there anything that you would recommend to replace or that is prone to failure on these engines while its out? Chain tensioner, certain gaskets that go bad etc.

Water pump, T-Stat are all good ideas. Plugs and wires you can go without the added expense or hassle.

I would actually replace the oil pump if it comes out. Its a PITA because you have to take the chains off but if you mark the chains before you pull them off and put them exactly where they were then you shouldnt have any issues as long as the cams dont spin.
