5.4 engine newer upgrade

Does anyone know what other model years of 5.4 will work in my 1999 ford F350 vn #1FTSF31L8XEB29697

Valve cover #9E880AA
432 06-19-98

Heads RF-F75E-6090-C20A

It is a great truck ........ I,ve had all the problems on the engine though
blew half my plugs.... installed all steel inserts.
Had to to endure severe piston slap for the last 100.thou K
Now must be burnt valves on cyl. #3 & #7 low comp and burnt plugs.
I would like to up grade to the 5.4 with PI heads.
I.m not sure what my limitations are concerning the electronic part of it
Pcm ,..sensors ? If I do take a computor with the newer 5.4 does it have to be from the same style truck ? To match trans etc..egr
I have read alot of forums here and there ,,all guessing no one seems to know
Any positive info would be greatly apreciated.
Maybe I can fedex a case of beer Ha Ha
Thanks

Why not just rebuild the old engine? The 99 we have is everyones favorite truck around here and still runs like a top. I'm not sure what advantage you expect to gain from installing a newer motor unless its availability of parts. The 5.4 is the same as the old 4.6 which keeps getting listed in wards top ten in different configurations.

ah, now I understand. I think our 99 is a late date one. I don't think they've made any changes to the engine since then just the controls so I would think any engine would work just install it with the 99 controls. Anyone know for sure?
Maybe you should ask Ford customer service, they have always been helpful to me in the paste with questions like this.

As far as complexity and price issues go, you're best bet is to rebuild your existing engine.

Keeping the same basic engine will resolve your compatibility issues.

Additionally, there are a handful of performance upgrades you can add to make it perform significantly better.

Building 4.6/5.4L Ford Horsepower

Then, here's some links to engine components..

Patriot Performance Heads for the 5.4L 2V

CompCam and Crower Cams for the 5.4L 2V

If you did the heads and cam, with some minor "bolt-ons" like exhaust, tuner, etc, that would be a great engine.

I asked ford , plus all the installers around here ,....their not sure .but I think all the pin connectors are the same in 2000 maybe 2001 but different engine timing ...some egr some not .I dont know much about after market chips and stuff,
I wonder if they could modify my original pcm enough to adapt.
Its just if i,m going to spend the money on an engine I might as well upgrade to a proven performance upgraded engine thats newer with not much added cost
My 99 pre PI heads is a bit underpowered , Just a bit more power to last me a few more years. I still love my truck
