I have a 99 F150 w/an engine that needs replacment. It came stock with the two valve, PI heads. Can I swap this engine with any 97-03 5.4? What things are going to make a difference/problem with the swap? Which engines can I transplant succesfully? Thanks for any help.
Stay with a two valve, 99-03. If I recall correctly, prior to 99 were non-PI heads and Ford came out with the three valve in 04. You did not specify what motor was in the truck at the moment so I can't tell you any more than that...
Its the original engine. The 5.4 ,2 valve, PI head, 4x4, California edition with 4r100 trans. btw Do you know what will happen to my oddometer after changing engines?
Kar Kraft in Michigan has a lot of new and slightly used engines available...and other neat truck stuff. I asked my dealer what he would charge to change engines. They said about $800.00, they lift lift the cab of off the frame and everthing is very easy to get at. My 98 5.4 has 117K miles on it and running great, I would like the PI heads and fresh motor some day.
I went to the Kar Kraft site and they don't have the standard 5-4 2 and 3 valve motors they had a while back. Their inventory moves and you have to check from time to time.

does anyone know of a good softwear program that covers rebuilding a 5.4? I'm kind of in a toss-up over rebuilding this one, or just getting a new long block. The machine shop guy said the heads were fine, ford claims the block test reported no leaks... decisions, decisions. And by the way thanks Paul for the awsome websight.
Kar Kraft Engineering has 5.4 long blocks for $2,495. I don't think you could do a quality rebuild for that. Check their web site. I have no association with KKE.
