Since my wife & I are headed to Alaska for a couple weeks with my sister and her husband (1 week cruise, 1 week on our own), I've decided to buy a new camera. I'm looking at this Nikon package, Nikon D5100 16.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens & Extra 55-300mm Lens I'm thinking that the auto focus lenses will be better than the Nikon lenses I already have, 24mm, 50mm, 80-200 zoom (non-nikon) and a Nikon 500 mirror lens. Or would I be better off just buying the body and using my old lenses?
It's been a lonnnnnnnnnnng time since I messed around with photography!! My youngest daughter 'confiscated' all of my camera equipment, when she took photography classes in High School and College. (She still has it, btw!)
With that out of the way. . . .
I kinda set aside my old Canon 50mm (f1.2) lens, when I got a 28-85 (f3.5-4.5) lens. In fact, that old 50mm lens hasn't been on the camera in 25+ years!!
I also have a 80-200 (f4.5) lens and a 2x 'doubler' that I can use for each lens.
I would think that if you have a 'good eye' and can focus/compose your shots, you won't need auto-focusing lenses, UNLESS you're expecting some really 'snap' shots of polar bears and/or other wildlife that need to be focused 'quickly'.
Save your $$$ for the trip, then add lenses, later.
Looks like a nice package. Gives you some flexibility with the zooms and your primes are a great addition. I'd be buying a backpack and bringing all of it along. You don't get to shoot on an Alaskan cruise every day. Well at least I don't.
Actually Best Buy does have the same package with a backpack. I've been looking at that one also. I think it was like $60.00 more.
That's what I was sort of thinking, that an auto focus lens might be able to "save" some shots for me. As far as scenery pictures, my old lenses would work just fine i think.
