Well, one of the two Olympus OM10's finally quit working. So, now I'm down to one OM10 and a point and shoot. This gives me an opportunity to start shopping for a new SLR camera. I was thinking of going with Nikon since there is a Nikon dealer in town.
Anyone have experience with Nikon SLR's or any other brand of 35 mm SLR cameras? I haven't had to shop for a new camera before (my Olympus's were all used when I got them). Any information regarding this is appreciated. No, I'm not going digital.
I have an entry level Nikon SLR... the N60. The thing I like about Nikon is the body. It's heavier stronger than the comparable Canon and the lens mounting ring is metal instead of plastic. I beleive it makes for a more durable camera.
I would not recommend the N60 for very serious photography. It's kind of slow compared to high end models. But the higher end models I'm sure would be great.
Used to have a Mayima a long time ago and until it got dropped off the roof while taking pictures of Hurricane Hugo's damage to my mother's house. That was a pretty good camera too.
I agree with wahoo on the body weight but the ease and conivience of the Canon I feel is better. As far as the end product they both take excellent pics. A friend has a (Contex???) which is a really really good SLR. He has a lot of money tied up in his camera collection and seems to reach for the Canon Rebel most of the time. It all depends on what you're shooting he claims.
I have a 30 year old Pentax K-1000 and a few extra lenses. I know the camera is too old to compare with todays models but I wanted to say how happy I've been with its performance and quality. I don't know if Pentax is still around but if they are I would buy another camera from them.
My wife's 20 year old Canon AE -1 had problems with the detachable flash not getting the flash in to the camera. It is a great camera, and takes great 35 mm pics. She has all the lens we could get for it that , will take clear pics of the hair on a bees leg, or a deer 300 yards away. When we took the camera to the 4 camera shops in town, they all said it couldnt be fixed . So , we offered to buy whatever they had in Canon, Pentax, etc, that her five telephoto lens would work on. To us , not being pros, its the variable use of different lens that affords you the opportunity for great pics. To our dismay, all the shops said that the 1500 bucks we have invested in lens was wasted, because they will not fit any of the cameras made now. So, with that, we did not sucumb to tossing the old ae-1 away, its too good of camera. My wife went on line, found a guy that does Canon repairs in his basement, and for 50 bucks, shipping and all, we now have the old ae-1 taking beautiful pics again,
I used a Nikon a long time ago, and was not unhappy about it, so it must have been a good camera, however I replaced it with a Canon F1 and prefered that one. When the Canon ceased to function, I made the mistake of replacing it with a Canon F1n, which died very quickly.
I would not recommend that camera to anyone who likes taking photographs.....
I now use a Pentax PZ1P, which does all I ask it to, albeit without interchangeable focus screens.... Though mostly I now use a rather old digital camera, that is blurred, slow and cost me over $1000... I need to get one of the new Canon Digitals, with interchangeable lenses... )
I have a Pentax-k1000 also. I got it as a graduation gift. Best camera i ever had. Then the light meter quit working The store that sold and serviced them went out of bussiness. I might get it fixed one day cant get rid of it. I would get some good still shots of aircraft, and of the cars at car showes. I wish i could find one just about like it. I like the manual type, but have the option of automatic as well would be good.
My wife bought me a Pentax IQZ Zoom 928M , ( $268 bucks I think) just to take pics of my truck restore project. It is a very good little camera that takes great 35mm pics, and it has a lot of great features, but is handicapped by the lens tho, there a manual zoom 35 - 90 mm zoom in/out . Had it two years now , not one glitch yet, except a battery replaced.
Them Pentax K1000's must have been popular 30 yrs. ago. I purchased a 28mm lens and a 80-200 zoom lens to go with it. There weren't to many bells and whistles with it. The manual features made you a lot more aware of the picture quality as you could set things like depth of field or compesate for over or under exposure of your pictures.( dark subject with light background or vice versa.)
The weight of all the equipment didn't seem to bad until I carried it from downtown Las Vegas to the NASCAR race at LVMS on a bus and then back again. That's when I vowed to get a digital camera. I got a Canon with 3X optical zoom and 2.5X digital zoom.I think this is equivalent to 35-105mm. This camera does 99% of my picture needs, with immediate results and I save my Pentax for pictures, like portraits, where enlargements and graininess are a concern.

I always liked my old Canon AE-1, it took great shots and had a wide array of lenses and filters. But my mother has it, so now I use hubby's Canon Rebel EOSx. I love it, and if money's tight there are off-brand lenses that are a lot cheaper than the Canon brand and seem to work just as well.
Well, I've been looking on the web and found two cameras I kind of like: Nikon N80 and F100. I have to check around town for prices, but I had a photography teacher a few years ago in college and the N80 is what he used. Pretty reliable. I'm still not sure which way to go. Maybe I should write Santa.
i have a canon rebel with the standard lense and the 300x lense and i am very pleased with it. i want to get a larger zoom but the lenses are so freakin expensive.
I had an OM-10 also. "Fully" manual and easy to get good results.
The best part of that camera was the Zuiko lenses, all very sharp and bright.
I have an canon EOS now and it works ok, but I find myself fighting with the all the automatic gadgets in order to get the shots I want.
My Olympus is an OM-1. If you have Olympus lenses would you not want another Olympus body? You will find them on Ebay.
Way back in time I sold cameras. Nikon optics were considered the best in the world at that time, but would think everyone else has caught up. The only unusual feature I recall on the Nikon is the shutter does not fire horizontal, it is vertical, which allows 1/125th shutter with flash.
My OM-1 still works fine. I have a little felt showing in the view finder but Olympus no longer offers any repairs.
wes
I still run one OM-10. I hate to let all my Olympus lenses go to waste. I don't really care to deal with Ebay.
The only problem with the broken OM-10 is the meter. It's messed up. The guy at the camera shop said that it would work fine if I had a manual shudder speed adapter. I checked ebay and found a few for under 10 bucks, but I don't want to deal with ebay (I don't trust that sort of transaction and such). Unless someone wants to help me out. *wink wink*
