Put the trans shifter in N and see if that does it, or hold the key in start while wiggling the shifter and it may start cranking. Sounds like a neutral safety switch problem.
Yes, its set up so you can only start the engine in either PARK or NEUTRAL. It may just be wore and not making contact. The one on my C6 does the same thing just haven't gottenaround to fixing and/or bypassing it yet.
you could try jumping the starter, but do this with two people, one holding the brake with the truck in park, the other under the truck. jump from the batt cable to the small wire. if the truck turns ovwer then your problem is in the starting circut
when you try to start it, do you feel any resistance on the key when you turn it to start position, and does the spring push it back to run or do you have to turn the key back to run be hand?

What is it that may be worn and not making contact? and how can i go about bypassing it or fixing it?
tjc - "when you try to start it, do you feel any resistance on the key when you turn it to start position, and does the spring push it back to run or do you have to turn the key back to run be hand?"
This just started happening that when i start it, that the key doesnt automatically go back to the position that it should "In other words the starter just keeps going till i turn it back to the appropriate position, does this have anything to do with what you were saying and if so what does that mean?
Sounds like the electrical part of the ignition switch is worn out. However if this is not the case, there is the neutral safety switch, and starter solenoid to think about. Having a C6 i assume its an older truck, it may have a solenoid on the firewall, and on the starter.
I think your MLPS (manual lever position switch) on the trans could be bad and not allowing it to crank. It only allows you to crank if it is in park or neutral, if the switch doesn't say its in park (do to it being wore or not making contact) it won't crank. Will it start in neutral? thats the easiest way to figure out if its the switch or not.
Well, heres the deal, i keep playing with it till shell turn over. Ill put it nuetral then back to park, then turn it off, then try turning it over again. And rinse and repeat till im able to turn it on.
so the truck will still start with the key when you get it to turn over, but it does not return to run position on it's own. you have to manually return the key to run to stop the starter from spinning. correct?
if this is the case, it sounds like you have a two part problem.
first it sounds like the ignition switch is bad.
second, it sounds like the neutral safety switch is out of alignment or bad.
i had that problem ,
ran two wires from the selnoid into the cab to a push button
now its --- key-on----push-button -gp-----push button-start ---go
it's my security system---ya-thats it security
Hey, i was looking at all these neutral safety switches, and they all look different, and i dunno which to buy, can someone help me out? Btw, its a 91 f350 CC custom trim.
im having this same problem right now to bud, i turn my key and there's nothing. i think it just be some bad cables but im thinking of just doing the push button start also
