I had some carb icing problems today. The outside of the carb was slightly glazed over and had a little frost on the idle mixture screws area edelbrock 1403. I noticed while I was driving that if I got slightly above light acceleration it would start to stubble and shutter a little then if I gave it more gas it would take off. Has ran perfect with no issue until today. I drove about 50 miles and the last 20 were mostly highway. It was about 20-25 out and windy and snowing quite bit light fluffy snow. I am running a heat plate on the bottom of my offy dp. I have a 1 inch spacer between the intake and carb. Last year I ran both the heat plate on the bottom and a heated carb spacer with no problems. What I am wondering is if I should take off the spacer and mount directly to the intake or go ahead and put the heated spacer back on to. This is about the coldest weather we have had this winter so far. I took the heated spacer off last spring cause it seemed like it was a little harder to start once it was hot due to maybe boiling the fuel in the carb and ran better with the regular spacer. What are some of your guys thoughts and opinions on what I should do?? Thanks!
Hey Coolguy,
I have the heated spacer on both of mine and have been glad. It's been 10° - 20° with the entire body and windows chiseled over with frost every morning for the last two months. I've never had a problem with any icing.
I can tell my performance bogs a little because the underside heat plate isn't there, but I haven't had any running problems all winter.
I would put the heated spacer back on. When warmer weather gets here, simply bypass the spacer or install some type of valve to block coolant from flowing thru the plate.
The hot start issue with the heated spacer is not that uncommon for an edelbrock carb. Blocking off the coolant flow should be enough to help.
I can't do anything to resolve my hot start issue on the rotary, since the intake (dry) sits ~4" above the header, though a heat shield could help a little.......
Try taking the 1" spacer out and running directly on the manifold....that's what I ended up doing and haven't had a problem. JMO, there is no difference in performance with or without a spacer. The DP bores are plenty deep enough to provide good columnar flow through the carb without a spacer anyway.
You mention that you have the heated plate for the manifold and have had the heated spacer... do you have a source of preheated air going into the air filter housing?

I am just running an open element edelbrock filter which Is probably adding to the problem since all it's sucking in is above the motor. I ran both the heated plate and spacer last year with good results but my heat guage would go from 160-185 up and down most of the time. I was thinking it was because of the extra length in the hoses to go in and out of the space and plate. I ha them both plumbed in one going into the in hose the other to the out hose. I think I am going to try Harte3's way and just mount it directly to intake and try it. If not I'll put the spacer back on. I drove about another 90 miles this afternoon and it ran just fine. Had some idiot in a eclipse ride my butt then try to pass me on a country road with 4" of fresh snow then I got the stumble monster and it took off. Commmen sense should have told him four wheel drive jeep wrangle and four wheel drive F150 doing 35 roads aren't to good. I'm gonna swap carb aroun and see how that's goes. Supposed to be back up near 40 next week so I may not need to do anything. Gotta love Indiana weather!!!
I never see snow where I live and it never gets all "that" cold but even I noticed a huge improvement when I went to a OEM style air breather with a hot air tube. I had one of those open element chrome ones that came with the intake/carb but I turned it into a frisbee. All I am able to run as far as coolant supplied heat is the spacer being as the previous owner felt the need to grind on the bottom side of my intake.
