My Expedition has started acting very strange the past couple of days. CEL was on and truck was shifting all over the place below 35 mph. Code was p0012. I replaced the cam position sensors and things straightened right up for about 20 miles, then it started slipping real bad from a stop. O/D light is flashing. What is going on with this thing?
You need to get the codes read. The flashing OD light means a transmission code has been stored. It takes a high end scan tool to read the transmission codes, the places that read codes free don't have those.
Ok, I took it to a shop and it had 2 codes in it. P0731 and P0732. these are incorrect gear ratio for 1 and 2. It really seams like this is a sensor and not an internal issue with this thing. Any thoughts?
If it's a bad sensor you'll almost always get a code for a bad sensor.
What does the transmission fluid smell like? What does it look like if you put a drop on a white surface? I use one of the stickers under the hood for this. Is it red, brown, or black? Particles in the fluid? Smell awful?
The fluid seems to be just fine, red in color and smells like oil. this is from the dip stick and I didn't see any particles there. I will have to drop the pan to determine if there are any particles there.
CEL back on, code P0012, Cam Shaft Position Sensor. Transmission shop is telling me that the after market sensors are crap and they will make my transmission act the way that it is.
That is possible. If the speed signals are bad the transmission can have all kinds of problems. Get that fixed before attempting to fix the transmission.
OBD 2 code of p0012, over retarded timing bank 1. other areas of this forum are stating this is an oil pressure problem. This won't fix my transmission problem I'm sure but I guess I have a bad seal somewhere.
Is there a chance that a bad cam lobe could cause this problem with my transmission? The code p0012 cam shaft position sensor (bank 1 over retarded timing) could be a bad cam, the sensors are new.
Not sure, but does your engine have TWO cam position sensors?
And you changed BOTH of them and the problem went away for a while?
Do a search on this Forum for P0012 and read the threads by pholahan, starting with the oldest one first.
The P0012 code is the PCM's way of telling us that it thinks the bank 1 camshaft is retarded based on where the crankshaft is. That could be caused by a stretched bank 1 timing chain, a stuck cam chain tensioner, a bad phaser, or an incorrect signal from the bank 1 cam postion sensor.
So a bad cam lobe would not retard the camshaft. You could try and swap the cam sensors side to side and see if the problem moves to bank 2.
130k on the motor. I have changed both sensors and swapped with no change in the code. the CEL was on and the engine had a rough, almost like a "heavy" cam lope to it at idle, I thought the code 0012 was telling me "bad sensor", so I changed them. the idle smoothed out, car ran fine for 20 miles or so, then all of a sudden the transmission slips and the CEL comes back on with 0012 code again.
