I thought the code 0012 was telling me "bad sensor",
No, the P0012 is saying that it thinks the bank 1 cam is retarded. To get that code the PCM is reading the bank 1 cam position sensor and the crank position sensor and says they are not occuring within the allowed variation.

Sounds like the cam is out of time.

Maybe you have a sticky cam tensioner or a sticky cam phaser, and the cam is out of time intermittantly.
Has the oil been changed regularly on this vehicle?
Also, are you using a Ford approved oil filter?
Any unusual noises on start up, like a rattling timing chain?
the oil was changed every 6k or so. I am using a frame filter and yes, it has made a lot of racket at start up for the last year or so. because oil changes were so long in between it could easily have a sticky tensioner or phaser. I think I will start there.
Well now I'm desperate. I changed my oil and filter today and installed a new VCT Solenoid. I forgot to undo the battery when I started so before I plugged in the new solenoid I disconnected the battery for a few minutes. Seemed like an easy install. I started it up, drove about 400 yards and the damn thing quit running, What The Hell? It ran fine for a few minutes, it acts like the timing is out. so I need to reprogram?
New code; P2196 O2 sensor signal stuck rich bank 1 sensor 1. The car starts and does not make any noise, it is actually quitter than it has been in a year. It just seems to be missing so bad that I can't drive it.
P1296 means the PCM is driving the fuel injectors on bank#1 full rich, trying to correct for an over-lean condiction. Do you have a significant vacuum leak somewhere after the MAF? How about the infamous PCV elbow?
But if you have a camshaft out of time, that will cause misfires and the O2 sensor will read the unused oxygen as a lean condiction and add extra fuel.
This is the only code I have at the moment. I am not able to drive it, it misses too bad to go down the road. Is it possible for the cam to be out of time if I have not touched it?
My Navigator has been doing all these same things that you've described for about 6 months or so now, and I actually installed an oil pressure gauge on it so I can always see exactly what it is when my truck starts acting up like that. Which it usually stays the same.... I'm personally thinking it's the transmission because i've already had all the other sensors changed numerous times and just like yours it will go away for a while, then come back after so many miles, but my transmission is supposed to be serviced by the dealer only. Strange thing is, it never happened until after I had taken it to the local dealer to be serviced, and now they are more lost about what's going on with it than I am. I would love to actually find out what is causing it though for sure!!
UPDATE: I had the tranny replaced. Still had an issue with the CEL and obviously had some kind of cam/timing issue. I took the front cover off and found the chain guides on bank one in a hundred pieces, not good. I cleaned everything up, replaced the phasers, guides and chains and put the thing back together. It barely ran. Took it apart again and found the timing off by 2 teeth on bank 1. fixed the timing issue and re assembled. It wont even start!!! I don't want to throw in the towel but damn, this thing is killing me. Any suggestions out there?
