"Multiple HPOP changes, BEWARE!!"

After fixing my broken HPOP line I went for a ride. I had another trail of oil follow me home. Needless to say, I wasn't real happy and I willed a wrench to fly across the yard all my itself. I was leaking oil under the HPOP and first thought was I should have put on a new gasket. I emailed Joey and he said the gaskets are reuseable unless they are torn. So i went to tighten the two bolts that hold the HPOP and they were stripped!! I told Joey that I didn't over tighten them like I did the pressure line. I know its alumium and have had a few bad experiences with alumium. I start the bolts by hand, get them in a little way and wiggle them to see if they feel good to go. So this was his reply,

"easiest way to repair the cover is with a Heli Coil kit(NAPA Auto Parts should stock them). How many times have you had a pump off that truck? Usually if a pump is removed more then 3 or 4 times, I helicoil the cover. Fasten-All also sells a thread repair kit as well. It's call EZ-Lock. But the helicoil kits should be just fine.I can send you a link for the Z-Locks, if you want to see what they are about. It's on FordDieselPower.com

I only stock the HPOP gaskets and I don't include them with pumps. The stock gasket is re-useable, unless it's damaged? The other gasket would be the reservoir gasket I presume? They are re-useable as well, unless it's broken?"

So, there you have it. I've gone from the orginal 15*, to the 17* SD, to the adrenaline, and now to the T500. Now I have to take it off again!! If I keep this up I'll be able to change one in my dreams.

Oh, by the way, has anybody heard this before that after a few changes you should heli coil it? I sure wish I had known this!

Glenn I don't know if this is the one you seen but when you drill the hole just get it as straight as possible. You can get a kilt at napa that will have the drill bit and tap with it

That's the one I watched. NAPA went out of business here, bummer! I'll have to check the others or order one on line. So much for my weekend trip! I'm tempted to jam a bolt in there that's slightly bigger and force it up and call it good, LOL.

Hey glen. Any auto parts store will have them. Just make sure the thread is correct. I'd get a right angle drill for space constraint.

We used to do this on our racing karts all the time. Carb and exhaust bolts before the motor even went together. I should have done my front cover but never thought to when I had it off.

Never heard it before......now I'm scared........mines been in n out a few times.

replaced the original 15 with a used 17

replaced the used 17 with a new one

replaced the 17 with stealth twins

removed the twins to replace the rear pump because of a blown out fitting

removed the twins to rering the IPR's because it wouldn't start when hot.

removed the twins because the gasket between the pumps was leaking.

I was thinking that I would have to have a right angle drill. I'll take a bolt with me to the auto parts store.

Holy crap Rodney, you call that a few times! I keep thinking that somehow I screwed up but I can't come up with anything. The bolts tighten up normal and I know I didn't over tighten them. Then after the oil leak they were striped after a short ride? Maybe Joey's T500 is just to strong but not stronger then twins (especially in bed LOL). With twins I don't have any idea how you bolt them up. Surely more then just the two bolts?

Just 2 bolts. I'll get you a picture tomorrow. The parts are still on the work bench but there's no heat out there and I don't feel like getting dressed

Take your time and get the helicoils right, they work just fine. I've drilled out all the threads for my rockers in my aluminum heads on my race car and have all helicoils in there. I was ripping rocker studs out with the 800lbs of spring pressure. Helicoils in, no problem since.

PITA you have to remove it again, but you'll get it Glenn.

It seems very plausible with cast aluminum.
