They do make side boxes that go partially over the wheel well. That would leave the center of the bed front to back open to haul with.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this yet? I am about ready to build a box to my specs. I do like the looks of the Tuffy products, but they are not available where I am at.

You might try Tractor Supply or Attwoods, they both carry truck boxes. I've got one that might be what your looking for. I'm not at home right now, but when I get back to the house, I'll take a pic and put it on here. I think it's 12" deep, maybe 15" tall, maybe 32", 34"across. It's made by Delta.

OP, take a look at this Delta box:
Delta Champion 429000 Bright Aluminum Portable Truck Tailgate Chest : Amazon.com : Automotive
It's model #429000, and is available at other places but they don't show the correct image like Amazon does.
Auto Anything has a lot to chose from too.

That last box from Amazon is closer. Ideally, I would want the same as the original poster... Full 60" length (styleside), ~12" wide, 12-18" deep.

That is almost exactly what I was looking for! Only concern would be how to mount it as I believe its designed to sit in the bed. Thanks for the reply.

After reading your post, I thought, "that WOULD be nice" so I started looking too. I figured a small frame with legs along each side could lift it above the bed to any height you would want. You might be able to build a frame to sit in the side grooves of the bed too.

I ended up getting a low profile box that sits on top of the bed caps across the front of the bed. I still have room to put things under the box. If I think about it, I'll snap a picture of it and post it.

All my previous trucks had 8' beds so the short bed has taken some getting used to. I'm a Scout leader for my sons Scout Troop and as such, we go camping a lot. Losing that extra space has been a pain until I was able to get the Troop a Scout trailer to haul gear in. But I can't just go get the trailer anytime and use it to haul other material for my personal use.

I got some pics of my Delta box #810000. It has mounting brackets that mount to the bed, then the box locks onto the brackets, so you can take it out when you need the whole bed. It also has handles on each end. The measurements are 10 3/4"deep, 12 1/2" tall, 32" across. I mounted a ammo box on the end to hold my tow chains, their kinda rusty. The pics are in my gallery, I still haven't
figured out how to post pics to a thread with my iPad.

I've looked for years for a crossbox that I could mount at the rear of the bed, with a cap, and still be able to open the lid on it. Never have found anything. I've also kicked around for years thinking about making what I want. Just need it deep enough to carry tie down chains, snatchum strap, and assorted chain hardware. Don't want it too deep, maybe 6-10" is all, so I could still slide crap under it. I've looked into those behind/in front of the wheelwell things, and liked the plastic ones that hinged out, but, I really don't feel like cutting holes in my plastic bedliner, let alone using sheetmetal screws through the sides of the bed. I like something that basically hangs from the toprail, over the flange on my cap. Maybe I need to weldup something, patent it, and go from semiretirement, to fulltime retirement, richly that is.
