I don't have a build date yet? Even though it was ordered Dec. 15th 09, but started research on a crossover bed box. The truck is a Super Crew cab with the short bed. I realize the wheels housing are close to the beds front and I also would like a low profile box where the lid is closer to flush to the beds top rail. I also don't want to lose the ability to slide in a piece of plywood all the way in. The width is not that important as all I need to carry is a few tools, cargo straps and a couple of shotguns when going to shoot Skeet. The final wish list would be if the box was powder coat black. Any suggestions Gents?
DeeZee makes a narrow box for short bed trucks and I think they offer it in black diamond plate. It's 12" wide by 14" deep but it's a single lid. I found that the gull wing style box allowed me to mount the box tight to bed wall and not scratch the cab when open. Chris
My last truck was a crewcab superduty with the 8 foot bed and I had the standard diamond plate full lid box that mounted directly to the bed and if I wanted to carry full sheets of plywood I would simply lay them with the back end of the ply at the end of the bed and rest the front on top of the bed box and it worked out fine. If I was carrying drywall I would get a few 2x4's (usually needed them too anyway) and put them down first to support the drywall. You can always just let it but up to the bed box and rest the back on top of the tailgate ( I always keep a old moving blanket in the bed box for things like this). I usually did it the first way since most of the time I had a shell on it and don't like going down the road with the back shell window flopped open. I have since bought a new f150 with the 6.5 foot bed and put the bed box in that truck and if I need to carry any sheets of ply I will just rest it on the bedbox and the top of the tailgate and tie it down and let to 1.5 feet hang off the back. I never thougt I would own a short bed but since I have a ten foot utility trailer I use that for the big stuff anyway since I can park it in the garage and unload it as needed rather than have to unload the truck right away when I am tired.
