Timing

So i just replaced the heads on an 87 B2. When i re-installed the dizzy, i set the engine to TDC, and put in the dizzy with the rotor pointed at the number 1 cylinder. Now i can only get it to run if i put the number one plug wire on the post that is right in-front of the rotor pointing the number one cylinder.

Heres the problem, I can only find the timing marks with the timing gun if i place the timing light clamp plug wire number 3

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

When trying to time it are you disconnecting the wire (that hangs on the firewall)? If not, you won't time it properly. Check your Haynes or Chilton.

Even my long time mechanic (pro) didn't do that and wasn't able to get it timed properly.

Did you remove the distributor? Possibly one tooth off?

Yep, I saw that in your post, but the teeth are small. Sorry, I'm out of ideas. I'm sure you'll noodle it out.. Let us know what you find.
