I Timed that Bad Boy
So i disconnected the Spout, the only removeable plug besides the one directly into the dist. right??
Painted the THIN hard to see mark on the dampner florecent pink.
Put the timing lead on the #1 plug wire
Used the PASS side timing hole.
I got it into the hole and it ran TERRIBLY, i mean had no power.
Backed it off till it was 1/2 way from the hole to where the braket ends toward the frame rail. Runs much better.
IF the hole is the pointer and it is the rec'd. 10 degrees
why does it run crappy like that???
Did i do it wrong??
First time timin this engine, did it by ear before, but i want to get it right.
What should i set it at???
What do i need to do??
thanks
DT
When in doubt, find TDC and go from there aka bring the number one cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke, double check your timing marks, make sure everything is legible, use your timing light (looking for a flash were everything lines up at your desired BTDC) or set the engine at the desired BTDC and point the distributor rotor directly at the center of the number one plug terminal.

it was too much turned toward the firewall if that means anything, the wireharness out of the dist was parrallel with the firewall, like pointing at the framerail at a right angle.
What should it be set at???

Now, forget the distributor exists.

Find TDC.
Go buy a pistons stop that threads into the spark plug hole (or you can use a screwdriver wrapped in tape but you have to be consistent).
Remove number one spark plug.
Put your finger over the hole, have a buddy rotate the engine clockwise BY HAND, once you feel air blow past your finger, stop.
Insert the piston stop, rotate the engine BY HAND until it stops. Now, make a faint reference mark on the damper, now make a mark on the timing pointer or block that coincides with the damper mark you've made.
Remove the pistons stop, rotate the engine BY HAND about 1/4-1/2 turn of the damper.
Now place the piston stop into the number one spark plug hole.
Rotate the engine BY HAND the OPPOSITE direction until the engine once again stops.
Now using the faint reference mark on the damper, make a mark on the timing pointer or block thats inline with this mark.
Remove the piston stop and reinstall the spark plug and plug wire.
Now you have two marks either on the timing pointer or the block, find the center point of these two marks and mark it, this is temporary TDC. Now, rotate the engine (the shortest distance) until the faint damper reference mark is inline with the temporary TDC mark. Your at TDC, woohoo.

NOw if possible, remove all marks made.
Now look at the timing pointer, find "0" (aka TDC), make a noticable mark on the damper that coincides with "0" (aka TDC).
Now looking at the timing pointer, make a mental note of where 8-10 BTDC is or highlight it.
Now loosen the distributor slightly, remove spout connector, set up your timing light.
Start the engine, now when you see the timing light flash, you should see the TDC mark on the damper flash at 8-10 BTDC, if not adjust accordingly. Now you can play around with the timing. Advanced is more BTDC, retard is less BTDC, if you adjust the timing and it idles like chit, then you can almost bet you retarded it.
Good luck
Side note, if you do use a screwdriver, you have to make sure its inserted identically the second time as the first, otherwise, this will not be accurate. I suggest wrapping it with tape just to be sure you don't scratch anything. Do this at your own risk.

stractor
I'll let ya'll know how it turns out
Thanks

set her at 10 BTDC, like speced, still feel like i gotta play with it a little but it runs great with lots of power, can hear the lope from the cam now, amazing how much louder the engine is, i say before it was set at around 20
I'm gonna play with it a little more and see how it goes,
I set it at like 0TDC and drove to school, not knowing, and it sucked gas down and was harder to start cold.
I'll keep playing with it and keep ya'll up dated

It was put in in 02' i bought it on July 17 04'
I believe he said A crane powermax 260 or something close to that.
He also had 4.10 gears and lockers put in it, for hauling his GN cattle trailer.
Less work for me to have to do

, Ok, will look for it then.If you need someone to host/put it online, e-mail it to me. No problem at all, just keep it reasonable, about 30 seconds (using my digital camera) can be transfered via yahoo easily.
