Hey all. So after some reading here on the site. I believe that my shudder at 45-50mph when in overdrive is my torque convertor. I turn off the O/D and it doesn't happen. I'm also going through A LOT more gas. So I'm looking to get a round about price on what it will cost to get it replaced.
02 f250 5.4 4x4 I'm not sure on what trans I have.
Any info would be appreciated.
Before you drop a lot of money into it, you should have a good transmission shop (stay away from national chains) give your truck a test drive and see what they say. You may be getting ready to spend money you do not need to spend.
When I had the dealer replace my converter it was around $900 bill(that was about 2 years ago). My truck is a 6.8L V10. So it might give you an idea. But like REDFORD stated take it to a good transmission shop and get another opinion.
My plans are to have a tranny shop check it out before I drop any money into it. I just wanted to have a ball park price so I know if the shop is trying to rip me off.
The fluid is about 3 months old. I've had the shudder since before the fluid was changed. It should be the correct fluid. I was told it was Mercon
Just so you know, dropping the transmissions on these is not all that hard. MUCH easier than most automobiles. Lots of room and relatively easy access to all the bolts. It just takes time... Which is why it costs so much to have a shop do it. If you can change your own plugs and have patience and an ability to read manuals and learn, you can drop the trans yourself. A buddy or two to help push it back in helps. And you do need to rent a trans jack. Then again, the money you save on labor would easily pay for a decent trans jack.
It turned out that it was the torque converter. Ended up costing me about $800 to have it replaced. Which includes labor, converter, oil, trans filter, and a seal. Truck shifts into OD as smooth as day 1.
