My 2003 E-350 V-10 with 4R100 Trans just hit 30K and I want to have the transmission serviced. Is it a reasonable request to want the torque converter drained as well? I've heard it's possible and would want it done unless told it's not feasible or it's a huge upcharge to do it. Just want some input as I don't always trust the shops.
Wish the job wasn't so messy or I'd do it myself. Thanks
The only way to change the fluid in the torque converter is to flush the trans. Ford stopped installing drain plugs in the torque converter at the start of the '02 model year.
You can do it yourself without a mess by using this procedure:
Thanks Mark. I don't really have a good place to do the service myself so I guess I'll ask the shop what the cost difference is for a trans flush vs a standard servicing. The truck has never towed anything so maybe I'm worrying about nothing as far as the fluid in the torque converter. My neighbour who is an auto mechanic said if the fluid looks good I should leave well enough alone. Ford says service at 30K so that's what I'm leaning toward.

It sounds like you know more than your neighbour. He's wrong.
why not just put the return line in a 5gal pail (from the tranny)of tranny fluid and the line from the rad or cooler into an empty 5gal pail then run the truck (going through the differnt gears, until the first pail is almost empty....shouldn't this effectively run fresh fluid through-out the whole system?? If I'm out to lunch let me know
What's going to draw the fluid out of the pail of new fluid? Is there a pump in the pail? The pump in the trans won't draw new fluid in through the cooler line.
well....I've never tried it, just thought it may be an easy way to do it...seeing as it's a venture I'll have to undertake in the next few days (I'm lazy and always look for an easier way) maybe I'll pressurize the pail and do it that way
