Question Brake Booster Vacuum Line

Just installed a brake booster and new reservoir on my '77 F-100.
I had mechanical brakes and could hardly keep the truck from moving when i put it in gear!
I have a few questions.
1. Where does the vacuum line hook up?(i'm guessing the intake and if so what kind of fitting do I need to get?)
2. The brake pedal does not come up as far as it use to
so my brake lights now stay on. Did I do something wrong? or do
I need to somehow move the brake light switch?

Brake Booster Vacuum Line

The brake light switch is adjustable. Just look at it on the pedal arm and you'll figure it out.

As for the hose, either you can hook it up straight to the carb (like Holley or AFB) or run it into a fitting on the intake. There should be a bung onto one of the runners of the intake, either on the #5 intake if its Edelbrock/ Weiland or the #4/8 Plenum runner of a stock style 2 BBL intake.

Either way, the booster needs vacuum and doesn't matter how you achieve it. Whether it is a dedicated connection outlined above or a tee with another vacuum line (PCV)

Did you change to a power brake pedal rod? I believe that they are different.

There should be a Vacuum Tree at the back & Middle of the intake manifold.Same place the auto transmission vacuum line goes to

You probably didn't adjust the M/C to booster pushrod to spec!

You shouldn't have to unless you need a different pedal assembly.
Did you say you converted to power from manual brakes?

Do NOT tee it into the PCV line! You will get engine oil & combustion blowby vapors into your booster. The PCV line usually has slightly less vacuum than the straight manifold connection has.

Thanks for the fast replies guys!
I will tap into the intake. I did go from manual brakes to power brakes. The bracket I used was from a 73-79 pickup. After I get the vacuum line hooked up I'll bleed them and see if I have enough pedal.
Also my transmissin vacuum line runs to the carb., would it be better to run to the intake also?
Thanks again!

What kind of brackets did you use to mount the booster to the firewall? They do differ depending on the year and brake system style and would affect how far out the pedal sits.

Blow by into the booster? It's under vacuum.

And what, running into a connection off of a manifold is any different? There is a lot of contamination there, espeically if somebody is running an EGR.

What about leaky intake gaskets?

A Carter AFB runs the same vacuum thru the PCV as it does the booster port.

As also the port located on the right hand base.

Now I believe the PCV method should be the last used, it is a viable option.

What about modern cars that have tee fittings? My father's CJ7 has a factory tee, for what? For the PCV and brake booster.

Hmmm...

Yeah, I have seen those OEM PCV tees also on a few apps. There seems to be enough turbulence to carry some of that oil and crud up into the booster and lines. I have seen several with a fair amount of oil up in the booster. It looked to have swelled some seals and it wasn't brake fluid. I just make it a practice to avoid that situation. The gas fumes don't seem to be a problem. The oil seems to junk up the check valve at the booster also. I have also seen that PCV carb port closed off or restricted due to carbon and also plugging the booster vac line

While the OEM's generally have their act "together" sometimes they do things because it is expedient but not altogether right. I normally try to give the booster and PCV their own sep ports when I can.

Of course the modern car engines seem to run a little cleaner also

There are so many different boosters.

What is the number on the pushrod of the booster you got?

Yes of course, do you not have a vacuum tree for these vacuum lines?

Thanks again!

I found out the bracket for the booster was from a 78 f-series.
I did not have any tees or fittings on the intake(they were all plugged up). I went to Lowe's today and got 2(one for the booster and 1 for the trans. line) brass barb fittings.
Also, I got the booster and master cyl. as one(from Napa) and had looked up the part # for a '77 on napaonline.com.

We're trying to figure out the brake light problem

My Point is:
There are 18 booster combinations for these trucks.

With about 4 different mounting assemblies .

There are also different push rod lengths for these boosters.

77-79 have the most combos.
You have to get the right combination to have it work the way it is supposed to.

So,
What is the FT number on the Push rod near the hole?

Does the brake pedal arm have a bracket for the brake switch on the right side of the pedal arm and also a machined stud inside the arm?
