Hi Everyone ,
I'll make this as short as I can . My 1996 F150 has a weird starting issue and I really don't know what it is . It's been fairly cold lately and when I try to start it it turns over about 3 or 4 revs then acts like it hydrolocking .It will start but it's something that I want to fix . It has a new battery and that didn't cure the problem so ?? It has always started rather slow but I figured the battery was getting weak but like I said thats not it . The oil ( 10 w -30 ) doesn't smell like gas and it's not over full so I don't think it's getting fuel down into the crankcase . Any thoughts ? It's the 300 six with about 140k . I've had the truck since the summer so I don't know if it has been an issue before now or not .
A couple of suggestions. Take it by your local auto parts chain and get the battery, starter and alternator checked. It's free and might help find a problem. In addition, the other side of the equation is fuel. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, put it on the fuel rail and see what your pressure is before and after you start. Someone will chime in with the correct readings or I'm sure that a quick search will find them.
Put a timing light on it check its base time with the spout removed.
Make sure its set to 10deg BTDC first, then with the spout in place watch the mark as it cranks to start.
Based on what you said sounds like the computer might be advancing the timing out way to far during startup causing it to "chop", that is if base timing is correct to start with.
Dan , I'm not sure what you mean by spout . I've got my own timing light ( haven't used it for years ) so I am somewhat familiar with the timing marks and such .

Scroll down the page you'll find a post by "Subford", contains a image of the jumper and its location.
Thanks Dan , I found the picture . With any luck at all I hope to get on this thing in the AM . It's going to be around 0 to -5 tonight thankfully I've got a warm garage to work in .

Quick easy test be removing the spout and try starting it, see if that alone has any effect on the way it acts.
