I know it has been answered but I can not find it again.
I got a spyder, pedestal, up pipes, and two diffrent turbos with my spare motor. I am pretty sure the motor is 2000 or later. 1st question how do I tell motor year if the valve cover tag is not readable. 2nd I have the pedestal setting here in the floor how can I tell if it is late model?
I am thinking about a conversion and just want to see if it would be worth using some of this stuff or just buying the entire kit from Clay when I get the cash. P/N on first turbo is 1831457c91 has Allied Signal tag on it Garrett house
P/N on sec. turbo is 991966c91 Garrett tag and house
What exactly do I need to look at as far as condition for turbos. I know the fins on one of them dont look the best to me.
I would at the very least be getting the IH up pipes.
Thanks all
The serial number of the engine is located on the block by the oil filter housing. Take a look at that and it will give you a rough idea as to when the engine was built. The code to the right of it is the VIN code that the engine was originally in. (not always readable though) Those should get you pretty close to what you are looking for. The 2 means it is an '02, the E means it was a Kentucky truck, the numbers are the build sequence.
You are not kiding that it is not always readable. Mine definetly is not. the first number is actually over the S/N I can only imagine that it is a one, but not sure.
serial number i think is 74JU2U1257595. I can make out the E and a couple other numbers on the vin but that is it.
Did the pedistal come on the spare engine? If so and the turbo looks different then yours, the air side with the wheel is much larger, then its the late pedistal. Late turbo won't fit on the early pedistal on the engine its to low. There's a little more then a inch in height differnce.

Dang it just checked it is an early pedestal. Must have came with the early turbo I got with it. Guess I need to figure out what I need to get rid of. I think I have one early and one late turbo and an early pedestal, stock up pipes.
I think I am going to be better off just buying the conversion kit and be done with it. I will need it all when I get the spare motor built anyway.
well joe i think if you look on e-bay you could do it fore alot less. thats how i did it thinking for around 8 or 9 hundred bucks, good luck with this project
