2000 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 SOHC Doesnt Start
Hey all new to the forum, i just bought a 2000 ford explorer which didnt start... i put a new fuel filter, spark plugs and air filter in it...still not starting ...gonna do a a compression test tomm. and see if it the timing chains or tensioners...any other suggestions..sounds like its misfiring actually, it doesnt start with starting fluid sprayed in it....where is the ignition pickup located on these things? thanks for any help...i still need to put a new ignition coil and wires on it. plugs were in horrendous shape and i thought that was the problem.

Welcome to the forum!
Have you determined if you have spark? Do you have access to a fuel pressure gauge to determine how much fuel pressure you have? Were there any symptoms leading up to this such as rough idle, check engine light, etc.?
This engine uses a Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor in the ignition system to tell the coils when to fire the spark plugs. If the CKP sensor circuit is malfunctioning or the CKP sensor is out of alignment, you will not have spark. But, checking for spark is easy enough without just continuing to throw parts at it.

When i bought it the fuel filter was leaking so i had to change that and the plugs and air filter were in dismal shape when i checked them, seems like this vehicle received no tlc over its lifetime....previous owner said it drove good until it wouldnt start, im suprised it even ran for him the way the plugs were. gap on them were .95 or something when i pulled them out lol
