No I didn't wreck my car, and the stock market didn't nose dive again.
My computer CRASHED.
Have any of you guy's had this happen ?
I alway's thought that this sort of thing happened to other people. I hadn't put anything on disc for safty, so I lost all my favorite's, my address book, all my program's, all of my daughter's school work, well you can guess the rest. Geez, what a bummer.
Yes I had heard of this( after the fact), but the way I think is that if I gott'a go through all the trouble collecting address and such again I won't soon forget it. It took nearly 2 year's to get thing's the way I wanted them and BOOM all gone. My ISP said that a "BLACK WORM VIRUS" got me. Sent in through MSN instant messenger.
Yes, hence the reason I have 2 hard drives: one for saved files (mostly MP3's) and back ups and the other as the main drive.
If you have a hard drive fail and there is anything important on it that you can't live without, you can bring or send it to a hard drive recovery service. If you aren't going to use 2 drives, partition your hard drive (use Partition Magic) and it will be as though you do have 2 hard drives.
Oh, and if you don't want your computer to crash, don't use Windows or at least use Windows XP. I use Linux and Windows XP Pro and mine never crashes.
ALWAYS use an antivirus. You can buy the entire Norton Systemworks on Ebay for $10.00 (yes, believe it because I did and am currently using it). McAfee is all right, too, but I personally prefer Norton. And don't forget to update it. You can set it to remind you.
yo,
With the dig cams and many personal files that reside only on a pc it is imperative to back-up these files.
Also, at my last job on a mil base, it got to the point that discp. action was being taken against those who didn't back-up files and had crashes; most were caused by bad hard drives. We did recover the files on some drives, but the time delay caused other problems.
If i have an external hard drive can it be affected if my computer crashes? I got it because my laptop was running out of room so now it runs a lot better because i keep all my music and autocad files on the external drive along with some other random stuff. is all that stuff safe over there on the external? and what else should i move over there if it is.
aj,
At work a few yrs ago, my hard drive froze, thereby losing any info that was not backed-up on floppies or zips. I lost only insignificant e mails and some minor info. Any important info should be backed-up on a zip or cd. I would also e mail important docs to myself for retrieval at a later date. I rotated this info based on currency and importance of the info such as on-going work projects.
I think I've finally gotten everything straightened out.
After using the recovery disc 3 time's and a lot of help from my ISP and Hewlett Packard, this darn thing is working better than ever.
I learned a hard, cruel lesson a few years ago. Lost everything on an old drive that started making grinding sounds before it finally went. Couldn't even imagine how much of a disaster that would be for me now. So here's my current backup method:
I have an extra hard drive that I burn my entire main drive contents onto about 3-4 times a year. I use Norton's "Ghost" program which, among other things, allows for complete main disk duplications....and I mean an identical copy, with the operating system, all programs, all windows and program settings, all files, etc., on there so you can boot right up with it. So now if my main drive should ever fail, I can just yank it out and slip the duplicate in there and experience virtually no down time. In between these main disk duplications, I burn to cd any new files that I consider "mission critical" to my business (or Ford truck ), which keeps the overall backup system up-to-date.
