Another possibility I thought of. What about increasing compression ratio by shaving the heads? From what I've heard from a friend, can get it done reasonably cheap around here. Would there be any decent benefit if I can get it done for say, under $200? Current ratio is 8.4:1 If I can up that and keep running at 87 octane, that'd be pretty awesome.

Increasing compression is a great thought... but...
Trying to get much compression increase by milling heads is not so great.
1. It is difficult to mill off enough material to raise compression enough to really help.
2. If you do the head surface will be thinner and weaker.
3. Will need to have the the bottom of the intake machined as well to fit.
4. Will need shorter push rods.

Ah. And I'm guessing all that other stuff is what gets you on cost?

Yep, If you really want to boost compression, its pistons or heads with a smaller combustion chamber. If it runs well and does not smoke or rattle I would look at heads. I know they are pricey, but if you look around you can get a good deal. Also, with the right heads you can get better flow, increase compression and lose weight all at the same time.<O</O

About how much max compression ratio can I run 87 octane at?

Looking at Summit, they've got a whole bunch of choices, I'm really not sure which I should get. Any suggestions?

The current engine runs quite well, and the more I think about it, the more i get the feeling I should just modify it to increase the mileage. Figure, AOD transmission, bolt on EFI, electronic ignition, and new heads for better weight/compression. If I do most of the work myself, I can probably keep the cost under $5000, and do it piece by piece rather than doing the whole thing in one big lump.

I've got the same thing as far as motor goes, but so far I’m not willing to part the money for the Edelbrock 61629 heads, It has been a while since I looked at the specs on them, but I was thinking they would bring the compression up to about 9.7, which I was willing to give a shot. Aluminum dissipates heat well and is less prone to detonation, these along with headers to get the heat out fast. I have got the headers, intake, carb and ignition, but wow, the heads are 800 each on Amazon, and I just can’t justify that right now. <O</O<O</O
